Today I got a bad virus, got the blue screen of death. I knew then I had to do a recovery. But when I boot up the pc with the disk in the drive my pc starts up normal, there is no prompt to start the windows XP home disk

On the disk it says Operating system, re installation CD.

My bios is set up like this

Drive Config -Primary Master Drive=Hard Drive

Secondary Master Drive=CD-Rom Device

Boot Sequence =IDE CD-Rom Device (its first at the top, with a check mark)

Please advise, thank you

Just because you are infected doesn't mean you have to reinstall windows.

Can you still boot into windows? If so then do the following.

Please follow these instructions carefully. You may need to download the tools from an uninfected computer.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

As long as the cdrom is setup as first boot device and the cd is actually bootable with no scratches close to the outside or inside then it should ask you to press a key to boot to the cd. Are you sure the cdrom drive is good?

I see some light scratches on the disk. by the way, the CD drive is an external drive that I bought a couple of years ago. Im not using the internal drive.

That's why it won't boot to the install cd. Does the bios have the option to boot to usb? You must set it to boot to usb cause you have a usb external cdrom. If no usb option then you'll have to replace the internal cdrom if it is broken.

yeah, the internal cd-rom does not work.

As far as the usb option, in boot sequence there is no usb option

I only see USB Device (not installed) in the Hard drive sequence menu part.

Guess Im cooked
