PC2100 Availability

Presently I have only 256Mb of RAM in my machine. It is labeled as PC2100. I want to upgrade to 1Gb. I am running a Intel P4 2.8Mhz (or there abouts). The Machine "model" number is P4M266-8235.

With the above information:
1. Must I stick to PC2100? If not, what would I go with?
2. Recommend 2 x 512Mb sticks?

I appreciate any information that the members might be able to give me.

Thanks again

fred

It depends on the motherboard. Some are picky as far as what ram can go in it. If you know what the motherboard is you can try looking it up online and see what it can take.

pc 2100......ddr? also, it depends on how much your motherboard can support. if it can only support 512, youd be wasting your money. if your motherboard supports dual channel, it would be cheaper and maybe even better if you went with 2 512 sticks.

go faster than pc2100. pc2100 will be slow no matter what the timings are.
"I am running a Intel P4 2.8Mhz".. haha i think the first microprocessor ever made was 2Mhz wasnt it? oh well... its 2.8Ghz, not Mhz.
yea, check your motherboard model, and google it. check what speed memory your motherboard supports, and then go with that!

Thanks guys for your speedy reply. The motherboard book says:
"this motherboard provides two 184-pin DDR DUAL INLINE MEMORY MODULES (DIMM) sites for DDR memory expansion from 64MB to 2.0Gb DDR SDRAM"
In a configuration table it says: DDR266/DDR200 DDR DRAM Module 64Mb-1.0Gb.

Does this help in my question????

Big oops on my part. shows you how long I have been around computers. Used to work on IBMs 1400s and 1620s back in the early 60s. Forget the processor speed but must have been in the Kz then. :-)

well, it helps you: the most it can support is 2gb, which is more than plenty for you i would imagine. if you have the money, just go ahead and get pc3200 (two 512 sticks will be fine).

It says you only have 2 slots for ram, do you know how many is occupied right now? You cannot get exactly one gig of ram without discarding your old ram. So I would eaither buy a 512 stick or get a gig stick.

If I take the suggestion to go to PC3200 I will completely replace the old RAM. 2 slots with 512 in each one. Don't think it would be a wise thing to mix types.

Anyone else think the answer would be to move to PC3200??????? Just wondering.
