Besides simply buying a cheap unknown brand of memory your board may not run 1gb size dimms or you simply bought the wrong type? If your board runs single sided memory(row of ICs on one side only) and you installed dual sided(ICs seen on both sides of dimm) oops! beeep beeep beeeeep beeeeeeep is the thing to expect. What make and model board are you running? The specifications will usually show the type and amount of memory supported.

That board supposedly will run four 1gb dimms. One thought owuld be the timings since prebuilt systems usually allow only value ram. Before ordering you should have matched what they usually list for 1gb memory to what you would find at the bendor you order from. Often returning used components like memory or a cpu doesn't go well but you can try.
