PCI-E, PCI-E 2.0, PCI-E 2.1- what is the difference??

Lads i have asus P5G41T-M LX motherboard (http://www.asus.rs/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5G41TM_LX/ ) and I am wandering can I install on it this g.c. ( http://www.myshopping.com.au/ZM--12...28_bit_GDDR3_650_1800_MHz_DVI_HDMI_D_Sub_DX11 ). On motherboard it I have PCI-e and this card is PCI-e 2.1... can it bee done (and why if cant) ??

Iirc, the difference is speeds, that said you dont lose much using 2.1 pcie cards in 1.0 slots. In fact im using a 2.1 card in a 1.0 slot. So yes it is possible. Generally its all backwards compatible, although some people have had problems the general consensus is that it works a treat.

Each new iteration doubles the available bandwidth - eg a PCI-E 2.0 X8 slot has the same bandwidth as a PCI-E 1.1 X16 slot

For the most part they are all backwards compatible. A PCI-E 3.0 card should work in just about any full-length PCI-E slot.

PCIe X16 2.0 are backwards compatible with PCIe X16 1.0

You can install video card PCIe 1.0 to your motherboard's PCIe 2.0.
You can install video card PCIe 2.0 to your motherboard's PCIe 1.0.

In most cases yeh, but some motherboards are a bit funny in terms of backwards compatibility.

@OP when i bought my 6850 and wasnt sure if it would work i just googled my mobo, and the gpu i was looking at to see if anyone else had the same or similar set up. Try that.
