what would happen if i put the card in anyway? would it jus tnot work? and what does it mean to update my mobo

it wouldnt work, just buy a new motherboard. find out what socket cpu you have i assume its a 939 and buy a motherboard

Usually if your motherboard has a PCI-E X1 slot, it has a X16 slot. Give us a link to your motherboard and we'll make sure.

not only would it not work, it wouldn't fit, pci-e 1x are really short slots while pci-e 16x are much longer

Ya but normally a mobo with pci-e 1x has a pci-e 16x slot as well, the 1x slots are meant for like expansion cards, you will start seeing more cards that go into reg pci slots start being made in pci-e 1x format more often, its for cards to use the new bus but not waste a whole big slot for it, so most include either a pci-e 16x and a 1x.
