pci express 2.0!!???

I think all the x38 chipset based motherboards have pci-express 2.0. And you dont need pci-express 2.0 to use a 8800gt.

But would it get a performance increase as a result of using pcie 2.0? Or is it sill under current 2.5gb/s limit(I think its 2.5gb/s on pcie X16)? and all they're doing is making this compatible with both pcie X 16 and pci 2.0?

I think the performance would be the same, I dont even think the 8800 ultra uses all the bandwidth of PCIe 1.1 X16

Yea, the geforce 8800 gt used both pcie 16 and 2. But what im realy asking is the pcie 2 better then the 16? I want to get a motherboard what will have the better slots. Im told it does work better if not 2times better, is that true? Well i rather pay the extra money to get a slot that works better for the 8800 gt card and future cards.

Any X38 chipset MB would support PCI-E 2.0. But the improvement based on current board is not significant enough for me to pay the extra.

Like I said the 8800GT does not use all the bandwidth of present day PCIe 1.1 X16, so there will probable be no difference running it with PCIe 2.0. As far as I know no present day video card uses all the bandwidth of PCIe 1.1. PCIe 2.0 will make a difference when Nvidia and ATI make faster card in the future.

Like poeple have said, PCI 2.0 offers DOUBLE the bandwidth, but wether or not the card would use this is questionnable

Yes, that is true. But I think the point he was making is that currently pci2 motherboards are really expensive, and right now no card needs pci-e2 to utilize it's full performance. So it would be smart to wait until it is provides more performance than pci x16, and also for prices to drop.

Yeah that's exactly what I meant. It doesn't matter if it supports it or not, if the 8800GTX can run at its full potential on PCI-E 1 then why get PCI-E 2 if there is no performance gain. It just "allows" more bandwidth but it doesn't mean the current cards will be using it all.

as I've said in another forum, there are PCIe2.0 cards coming out this month and more in the future, so if you're upgrading to a new motherboard then why not go ahead and get the x38

I think its better to wait and see. You have to remember that electronics depreciates, so there is no point in buying a motherboard or any other component for something that is "yet to be released".
