PCI Express x1

I've noticed that mainboards are starting to have a lot more of these PCI express x1 slots, some have more of these than PCI slots...

i'm finding it kinda frustrating, cos i know i wont use them... yet every board i look at has at least 2 of them...

what kind of devices use them?

They make a few add-on cards for the PCI-E x1 slot, such as RAID/HDD controllers, network cards, etc.

Basically anything that you could think of that could be used on PCI, with the exception of sound cards which they are still perfecting.

network cards, raid controllers, usb adapters, soundcards, fan controllers...for some reason having a smaller port seems to be the future

some specialty workstation graphics cards use PCIe x1 and support quad monitors such as the nVidia Quadro NVS 440.

I've seen a few x1 video cards, but they arent high end because of the limited bandwidth.

hence they are specialty workstation cards, not gaming cards.
