PCI Video card on Dell

Alright, so I searched the threads and only found one thing that would kind of relate.

My friend has a pretty decent dell computer. The video card isn't very good though and it is an onboard one. So he got a PCI video card from his friend's father. Will he be able to install this into the pci slot and use it?

I saw somewhere on this about disableing the onboard one in the bios will that work?

If anyone knows anything about this thanks.

If not sorry for wasting your time but thanks anyway.

is it pci or pcie

Just PCI

He is on his other computer right now and trying to figure out how to disable it in BIOS. Would you happen to know exactly how to do so?

go to the BIOS and find a tab that says video or it might say something else and it should say onboard or auto or something like that choose auto or something that says disable onboard video and that should work if it doesnt post back

He said he put it in and it didn't work on the PCI one but still worked on the onboard one.

did you save it in the bios or not check again and see

and did you install the drivers for the videocard

Sorry guys, Heinz was trying to relay messages and it was getting a bit difficult.

This is "his friend" with the Dell problem.

In the bios I couldn't find ANYTHING about disabling the primary video controller [I'm assuming that's what I was supposed to be messing around with...], the only options were Auto or Onboard, it was all ready on auto, so I left it there and saved the changes, blah blah blah.

I put in the new video card and attempted to turn on the computer, the computer turned on fine and everything but the screen just stayed blank, as though it were in "stand by" mode.

I did install the drivers for the video card but when I put the monitor into the new video card, the screen still stayed blank.

I'm using the old one now, as the new one isn't working.

Does anyone have any ideas/hints/anything to help out?

try taking out the videocard and putting it back in again to see if that helps at all

I dont think it will.

The thing with Dells is that the original video card is integrated into the motherboard and I don't know if you can bypass it to get another one working.

It only allows you to work that one it seems like.... I don't know.

just try it i have a videocard in my computer its not onboard and it works and when you make the changes in the bios are you saving them that could be the problem

What kind of computer do you have? Dells seem to not want you to upgrade video cards, and if you do they want you to send it in and buy their shit and pay for them to do it.

and the thing is I never even made any changes in the bios, I couldn't find anything that had to do with disabling the current video card or anything. it was "onboard" or "auto" and it was ALL READY on auto before I even messed with it, but yes I did save the changes when I left it as auto.
