If the card fits, it works 
Some really old PCI cards wont work (the 5volt ones). Any reasonably new PCI card will work in a PCI-X slot but the entire PCI-X bus will be slowed down because of it (kind of like putting a PATA harddrive on the same channel as a CDROM). You can also put PCI-X cards in a PCI slot.
