Your sure, even by that far? Pcie 2.1 in a 1.0 lane? If so, im holding you accounatable for if it doesnt work. Lots of people on the net say it doeant. Do you have any proof?

2.1 2.1 2.1 you guys! Not 2.0 in 1.0, I know that works, but people have had trouble with 2.1 in 1.0 slot!
I've run my 6870 in my old Machspeed board with PCIe 1.0. It'll work.

98% of the time it will work. There were a few 1.0 boards that had a problem. They had problems with 2.0 cards, which would apply for 3.0 cards too. Most had the problem fixed with a bios update, not sure they all did. Cant remember which boards they were. But it seems like they were some VIA chipset boards and maybe a few Nvidia chipsets. But it wasnt really a chipset problem is was a bios issue.

I have a nvidia board, 650i chipset.
It was a older chipset, something like the Nforce 4.
I'd update your BIOS before you try. You should be able to download the latest from the EVGA website.
