PCiEx16 vs PCIEx2.0

I got an Asus A8N Deluxe motherboard with PCIEx16 slot. I want to know if I could upgrade to a 9800 series in the future. The 9000 series cards are all PCIEx2.0 is what I seem to gather online and I have heard some say they will work in an older slot and some say they wont. I would like to know before I buy this card and have to upgrade the rest of my computer!!

Right now I have a 8800 GTS 640 MB. Are the 9800 series cards that much better? Will my slot slow it down if I were to get a newer card? My birthday is coming up in Sept. so I want to know what to ask for.:D

Ask for the 8800gts 512mb! Seriously, it's the same card as the 9800gtx, just not clocked as high. Performance difference is extremely close to null, and best of all the price is much less. (It's not the same card as your 8800gts 640mb, if you're wondering, the standardized memory versions use the same core that's in the 9800gtx.)

That's getting ahead of the Q's, Pcie 2.0 cards are backwards compatible to no ill effect. Only a very number of motherboards had problems, not yours. Going form an older core 8800gts to a newer core GTS or 9800GTX is a pretty nice jump.

Thanks for replies. :) I think I'll end up getting a 9800 GTX although a GX2 would be nice...but that won't happen. I have to depend on the rents for money now since I start college this fall and I take what I get.:o
