hi,
i can never get a clear answer for this outta any of the books i get on building a computer.

are some pcu only for some mobos?

i read that some mobos have 2 plugs and some only have 1.

im asking because i know how to do almost everything in the building process but this.

also i have an old p3 and some pentium 2s and lower that i would like to pilage some parts from.
like the case, pcu, floppy, ect....

i hope im specific enough, is there and links that go over this or can you help?

thanks
roy

cpu? you just gotta buy the cpu and see how many SOCKETS it has and then buy the motherboard that supports that SOCKET number.

what plugs? the one where the psu goes or the one in the back of the case?

yeah you can use the salvage parts to save on money and shipping.

sorry i meant the power supply unit.
i hear some power supplies have 2 plugs into the mobo and some only have 1.

so basically i mean the whole question as posted above but there was a typo on pcu, it should have been typed psu. :(

Any ATX PSU you buy now will have the main power connector (20 or 24pin) and the ATX12 connector (4pin) and will be compatable with all motherboards (excpet for OEMs like Dell).

thank you, thats a huge help.
but what about older computers i have that are pentium 2s & 3s that already have a power supply in the atx case but i will be switching to a more current mobo and processor?
thanks

ps
im so glad i found this place :o

Older PSUs wont have the ATX12 line (and if it's really old it may be an AT PSU which wont work with any new motherboard). You need the ATX12 for all P4s and most Athlon 64 systems, I don't think Athlon XPs use it (there may be a few I'd have to check to be sure)

The Athlon XP itself doesn't need an ATX12 connected but I think there might be a few board models that make use of it.
