Pentium 3 - 450MHz WinXP

I (also) have a Pentium 3 450Mhz I've got WinXP on it and it's quite slow, will I see a tremendous differece in speed if I put Win Me of Win 2000 instead?
 
Doubtful. If you think about it XP is more advanced software than Win ME or 2000 thus uses the cpu more wisely/ efficiently. I would recommend upgrading the RAM or CPU.

DON'T LOAD ME ON IT! Trust me, that's a horrible OS! If you want something older on it, load 98, or maybe even XP. XP does tend to run a bit faster than 2000...
 
i have a athlon k6 which is 500MHz. I've ran 98, 2K and XP on it. I will tell you right now, your RAM will enfluence the speed more then the CPU. As you go up from 98 to 2k to XP the memory requirements increase much more then the processor speed.

What exactly do you want to do with this computer? I have 2K on my K6 right now and it runs just fine, not slow at all. It's also a headless file server that is only running enough processes to keep the network connection up and run winamp. I don't even have antivirus on it, as it's isolated from the internet.

I think Corsair is the best of the best mamory manufacturers. I think that either of these chips would do greatly improve the speed of you computer.

that wont work on that system at all, PC133 SDRAM will work.

I agree with vortmax. I have ran windows XP on an 450MHz P3 and it ran fine but i had 512 mb of ram.
 
yea 98 isn't the most stable thing in the world. Back when I first started running 2k, and it wasn't game friendly, I dual booted with a version of 98 called 98lite. It was a SUPER stripped down and ran amazingly fast. It was also stable for about 6 hours at a time.
 
98 uses FAT16 and FAT32 file structure, it also manages your memory totally different, which is part of the "stability issue" wih older OS's. You'll have to reformat in a FAT format instead of NTFS if you use 98.

Personally I'd suggest slimming down XP by disabling ALL unnecessary services you don't need, using the "classic" theme with NO visual effects. Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > "Settings" button under Performance > Under "Visual Effects" Tab disable EVERYTHING that is checked. This should save considerably on RAM use.

You could also add more RAM if that's feasable for your mobo. Doing that will help significantly and prevent you from having to un-instal Windwos, format, install an older OS, and experiment, etc.

You were right, its unbelievably fast now, and I uninstaled Kerio - using Win Firewall, very fast now.
