Pentium 4 3.00Ghz Hyper-Threading

So, I recently acquired a Dell Dimension 3000 with a Pentium 4 3Ghz HT CPU.

I looked in the BIOS and Hyper-Threading was disabled... If I enable it would it make the computer run faster?

If not, what does Hyper-Threading do?

So for me, its pretty much like having a Dual-Core, with a Single-Core processor?

Well, not quite. In the netburst architecture sometimes threads could get hung, and then cause slowdowns. Its not nearly as effecient as a dual core processor, but it allows you to run two processes at the same time- which can bring anywhere from no benefit to 30% or so of a benefit;)

It will make multi-tasking more efficient, but on the flip side, if you're running a heavy duty process that isn't multi threaded, you're essentially cutting your processing power in half.

Well, it doesnt actually cut processing power in half... Superpi times can prove that, my times were faster on my p4 with it on than off and superpi is single threaded;)

I still have an "SL7e4" and it runs much faster with the HT enabled. I personally would select it on, Yes.

Another "proof" of how it improves performance, is that intel has re released the hyperthreading into the latest i7 processors;)
