Pentium 4 640 3.2GHZ VS athlon 64 3500+

there a type error in the thread name it should be pentium 4 640 3.2GHZ VS athlon 64 3500+.

Which one of these would be better if NO gaming was planned to be done on it.

Most important factor is multi-tasking
This would be for a work computer for basic function like internet, office, and database programs. In a enviroment where many things will be open at the same time. (which one of these would be better assuming that plenty of ram is in the computer to handle all the programs being open at once)

I think I would have to say the Intel, for once:eek:. Although, it shoudn't matter too much which one you choose, the RAM is a big factor in the multi-tasking.

Yeah I know that. Either way I go I plan to put 1gig of ram in that shoud be enough to handle lots of things being open at once.

Well ya, but don't pretty much all of the better Intel CPUs have HT?
1. Not all Intel CPUs have HT
2. Since we are um... comapring AMD to Intel .... and AMD doesnt have HT ....

If its a work PC, go with the intel.
A lot of software doesn't work or has issues on MS Windows XP 64-Bit

Nothing to do with intel, I was talking about the Athon 64 bit. I have a lot of driver issues with some components and Xp Pro 64.

1. Intel has 64bit desktop procs now too ... and given that AMD has have over a year extra for driver development it would seem wiser to go AMD for "at the moment" driver compatability

2. Perhaps you meant to say "Stick with XP32 rather than XP64"?

3. Other than lack of 64bit drivers from logitech, ive not encountered a single problem with 64bit drivers (hell I like my 64bit sound drivers a lot more than my 32bit ones) ... any [bad] experiences you had in particular?

Yes, I was saying stick with the 32-bit procs until better operating systems come out for 64 bit ones, I've just had bad experiences with my 64bit procs and most of my old components I had do not have 64 bit drivers and don't work properly. I suppose if you want to build a completely new system, 64bit should be fine if they have the new drivers... but I canabalize my old systems :)

^^ me too. i like my 64 bit sound. nvidia are really doing things, easy to configure interface.

other than that all my drivers work perfectly, except the lan card, but i have an onboard lan so that is irrelevent. there is a problem with speedfan - it doesnt detect the mobo properly so speeding down fans doesnt work. other than that, xp-x64 1433 is great.

Oh, I'm not complaining, free windows is always nice. :)

But I'm just saying there is a chance that some things might not work, and considering its a work pc... reliability over gambling?

well i wouldnt say gamble - xp-x64 1433 is microsofts latest release, and is RC2, so it shows that they are getting close to completion.

true, there are things might not work. your computer could have a nasty virus tomorrow etc.. this is why people back up data. if you want to be cautious invest in another hard drive like me and install x64 on that, then if either o/s gets corrupt you can get working straight away. or you can just use raid.

A little note here, building a 64Bit system does not mean your stuck with 64Bit software. A64 will run your 32Bit software pretty darn good until the day comes when you feel like going to a 64Bit environment, so don't diss them for that reason. :)

Personally I'd go with Intel though, their cpu's with HT technology would be the better choise for you and your tasks. IMO

Thats why I am saying to go with the Intel, if you aren't going to use its 64-bit capabilities, you might as well wait and go 64 bit in the future, stuff will be faster and cheaper.

It depends on what you doing. Most people that go amd that know what they doing not picking amd for it 64 bit ability. They picking it because it performs better then intel in what they want it to do which mean gaming.I bought a athlon 64 cpu becuase the most important thing to me was it ability to play games. Of corse I still need it to do other things but my cpu can handle everyday things just fine. athlon 64 performs just as well as a 32 bit cpu in 32 bit.
My question to you is why should you not pick a 64 bit cpu if it does not cost more and it performs better in what you want it to do.

Edit: opps I just relized I started this thread and for a none gamming computer. Well the 64 bit augument is still pointless. While the pentium would proberly be better for everyday things. After pricing the systems the amd computer was cheaper to build and I gave my friend the options telling him the penitum was a little better but he decided he rather save the money and go amd plus now he telling me he might use it for gamming afterall.
