i have built a computer for the misses to do home work on and i would like to upgrade the processor. Is there any upgrades out there for a 2.8ghz 521? I haven't been able to find any.

Thannks for your help

Are you saying you want a better CPU than a P4 521?

If so, we need to know what motherboard you have first.

yes this is exactly what i am planning on doing. I don't know the exact board currently it is at home. I know it is the factory motherboard for a dell e310 desktop though.

EDIT- WHOA WHOA nevermind, I just read somewhere that the 915 chipset doesn't support dual core chips.

Well then, what you want to look for is a pentium 4 in the 600 series. Like a 620, 640, 660, etc. These chips have twice as much L2 cache, and higher clocks 3ghz+, and also hyper threading but you have that now.

I actually have a P4 640, but I have yet to test it. The motherboard I'm getting for testing is on it's way. So in maybe two weeks I might be willing to sell it. It's 3.2ghz, 2mb L2 cache, with HT.

You may want to look into upgrading the ram if you haven't done that, it's only 512mb stock. It's max is 2gb or ddr2-800, I highly recommend max!

Oh by the way, all these CPU's are socket 775. The 521 number is the model of the CPU.

If you want Pentium, upgrade to Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200. It's a LGA775. It runs at 2.5GHz per core. Also (like 87dtna) said, upgrade your RAM to at least half of what is maximum that can be put onto your system and motherboard. Typically it is 4GB so buy extra RAM memory to either max. what can fit on your mobo OR buy up to 2GB. I'd recommend Dual-Channel

If you had the what else I said, his motherboard chipset does not support dual core CPU's!

I also said the max of the motherboard was 2gb.

yes when i got it i added the max 2gb ram. However this helped a little bit i would still like a faster processor. Should i just buy a faster 775 chip?

You need a P4, in the 600 series like I said. 620, 640, 660. These are faster and have more cache, and are the only CPU's that are gonna be compatable.

I don't think you are going to notice much of a boost in processing speed switching to another Pentium 4 Single-Core Processor. I hope you didn't pay much for it.
