Pentium and Celeron

iam using this intel p3 1.8ghz and want to buy this celeron 2.6ghz from a friend is this celeron any better even if its faster? any advice.

You wouldn't be able to upgrade from a P3 to a Celeron. They both require two different socket types. But, to answer your question in general, it would be worth the upgrade from a P3 to Celeron.

nononononononononononononononono

intel makes celerons like AMD makes semprons. they are the version of a better processor, turned way down. your proc is most probably exactly the same as that proc, if the one you talk about is a proc made to undershadow a proc that is better than yours.

just overclock it

Yeah Celerons are Budget CPU's but if he is talking about a Celeron D then it would be miles better

Celeron D's are Pentium 4 Chips with most of the Cache riped out to reduce the price big time

I've got a Celeron D, and its not half bad.

my bros computer has a celery d too. i must admit that those are better, but still not great

yes acourse... but he still wouldn't be able to upgrade from P3 to a Celeron correct?

i enjoy my celeron, cheap chips that are over clocked easily.

you're correct. totally different socket type although i think that should be double checked. i think the P3's are slot based? not socket.

how did you go about that, cause i can't find a new CPU that would be worthwhile upgrading too. so i was thinking about overclocking.

did you buy a better than stock Heat sink and fan?

no, i kept the stock fan and heat sink. it wasn't any EXTREME over clocking just a little boost from 3.33 to 3.61. i just got a 2-3C increase with load, thats also in a compact case. over clocked it up to 4.05 fairly easily with unrecorded temperatures. just brought it back down since no need to over clock that much with my 7900GT. runs my games perfectly. getting pretty acceptable frame rates on games like FEAR with max graphics.

The Pentium 3 and Celerons are from the same era, but since it's a 2.6Ghz, it's not the same socket (370 I believe?), so it wont work.

How much was he selling it to you for?

sorry typed it wrong its a p4 not a p3, p3 speeds is only up to 1.4ghz i am using a p4 1.8ghz. ok did not know about that celeron having a different, mines socket 478. thanks for the advice even its cheaper i did not bought my friends celeron.

As you are a Socket 478 you can use Celeron D, which is exactly what I have on socket 478, but they are generally worse even if you compare a P4 with a lower clock Frequency.
