pentium D oCing

ive got a pentium D 915 @ 2.8 ghz, im wanting to oc it but im not sure how far to push it. i have 3 rear case fans, 2 power supply fans, 4 HDD fans, and im using arctic silver 5. Im kinda thinkin about 3.2 ghz:confused: this is my first build where i didnt scrap components from other computers


oh yeah im also using the stock heatsink and fan:(
 
3.2 would be easy. Read OC101 for a better understanding, but basically just raise the FSB until you reach the desired speed, while lowering the RAM speed/raising voltages, and by raising the vcore voltage.
 
ive already read that, but i just wanted some reasurrance before i accidentally fried my CPU. especialy since my brother persists that to oc you will need liquid cooling. :P :P

If you're a novice at overclocking or dont want to take risks, then just raise the FSB and raise the memory timings, as long as you dont mess with voltages, nothing should happen besides it not booting.
 
What are you talking about with CPU-z? That will just tell you what speed everything is at and crap like that. The multi can be accessed through the BIOS along with the FSB. And i wouldnt be afraid of frying your cpu as long as you dont increase the vcore more then .5v or so. Just dont rasie it too high, and NEVER go past or at 2v.
 
CPU-z doesnt change settings, what your talking about is done in the BIOS. When people lower the multiplier, you wont be able to reach as high of a clock speed, but you should be able to raise the bus speed even more, which may help improve performance as long as the clock speed isnt significantly lower.
 
ok i was thinking it would just change the balance of the clock/FSB ratio

No, cpu-z will have no effect on your speeds at all, it just displays them. The only thing that effects that would be the multi in your bios which you should be able to adjust with that cpu.
 
You can't raise the multiplier on CPUs unless it is unlocked (ie, with the Intel Extreme series or the AMD FX series).
 
I've never heard that? The only ones that should be unlocked are the Extreme series (ie. the 965 EE)

Some 8xx and 9xx processors are Extreme editions that can have their multipliers raised..

Are you referring to the Pentium Extreme Edition 965 and 975? They arent really Pentium D's since they have HT enabled on both cores, but I guess you could call it that.
 
I see your point there. They are labeled as "Extreme Edition" on Intel.com. Still, though, they are in the same sequence. It could go both ways :).
