Pentium D vs Pentium 4

The pentium 4 is going to run faster on a single threaded application because its running at a faster speed. However, a pentium d is the equivalent to 2 processors due to its dual cores. So if your running 2 programs, or one multi-threaded program, youll get better preformance out of a pentium d since it can direct both threads simultaniously. however, if you were to run a single program the 4 would be better since it is technically faster...
IT is not at all equilivent to two processers. Intel preforms at multitasking very well, the only big different would be Multi-threaded applications, and If you were going to get a dual core i would try and find an AMD instead, but it sounds like these are your only two options. Newer, multithreaded apps and games will perform much better on the Pentium D. Single threaded apps will perform slightly better on the Pentium 4 (200Mhz vs a second core to take care of background apps).
Overall the Pentium D is a better processor, but whether or not it's worth the money depends on what you want to use it for. What are the other specs on the machines, and have you considered custom building?
