With some Pentium D's they say 800 something i.e. Pentium D 820 2.8Ghz others are in the 900's i.e. Pentium D 930 3Ghz. what does this number mean?

if i am correct, they are the build, or model number. Meaning the higher ones are newer and better

It's no different than the Core 2's being named in the 6000's and such.

The numbers simply refer to Intel's new model rating, similar to AMD with their 3200+ for instance.

The differences between the 830 and 930, is that the 930 has a 65nm process, and twice the cache (hence the higher number).
