Pentium Dual Core?

Is a pentium dual core E2180 any good? apparently its core2 based but with less cache? like a celeron?

It has only 2ghz and 1mb cache, but do you think it would be an improvement over a Pentium 4 HT 3ghz for gaming?

1) i can fit a micro atx board in a midi atx case right?
2) how big a psu would this cpu need with an 8600GT - would 500w with 18a on each of 2 12v rails be enough?
3) micro atx takes atx psu right?

i just used one in my gf's HTPC... it's a good HTPC processor, but spend the extra cash and get an E7200. i guess i'm spoiled by my 4ghz machines.

i want to spend less than £250 on the whole build, apart from the OS, so i cant really afford much more

Im also looking at the Athlon X2 5000?

Yes, Yes, and...enough of a 'sort-of' to warrant another Yes.

Tricky, depending on who you ask and what game it is. Typically, the Core series perform much better than their P4 predecessors, but a high-speed P4 with HT might give it a run for the 'brute force' method of processing, if that makes sense. See...tricky - hit or miss.

Yes

With a standard array of HDD's, fans, etc, yes, it should be.

3) micro atx takes atx psu right?

Yes.

upgrade the video card instead. and, those two processors are very comparable. i would say the core 2 would win, depending on the game. but like i said, the video card is more important (by a long shot) for gaming.

the psu is powerful enough. how much ram are you planning on having? i suggest 2x1gb dual channel. 2x2gb is good too, for a total of 4gb. especially if you run vista.

I did upgrade from P4 to PDC in months ago. This is result from Super Pi Score. Both, CPU overclocked by 15%.

Lower seconds is better.

22.532--Darkserge (Pentuim Duel Core 2400Mhz @ 2753Mhz)
35.750--Darkserge (Pentium 4 3400Mhz @ 3910Mhz)

yeah thats well good - superpi doesnt support threading or SMP so thats essentially out of just one core.
