performance difference between dual core and quad core?

going from the pentium d to a core2quad would be a noticable difference, the only time i would say it wouldnt be that much of a difference would be going from the high end core2duo cpu's to a low spec quad especially if you are just gaming!

multi tasking on the quad will be a very nice improvement over the old pentium d

Like funkysnair said, if you were upgrading from a Core2Duo at around 3GHz, then you wouldn't notice much of a difference, and if it's not an application threaded for 4 cores, then a 2.6GHz Core2Quad would actually be slower than a 3.0GHz core2Duo. Although at any rate, a Core2Quad would definitely be a major improvement over a Pentium D.

dude, upgrade your graphics card. this will give a HUGE improvement in gaming. also, you can overclock that quad to like 3.4 easy.

About 2/10 of software programs and games at current times use Quad-Core processors. Even if you wanted to buy it for gaming, it will not use his cores fully. Buy a Core 2 Duo processor, overclock it and to that, get a better graphic card. This will give you bigger kick in games than quad processor and you won't have to spend so much money on better RAM, PSU and CPU.

Well i can tell you when i want from my E6300 core 2 Duo at 2.8Ghz to my Q6600 at 2.4Ghz the quad was way way faster, and i got more fps in most games.

Then i overclocked the quad more which boosted performance even more.

I say go for the upgrade!

I am hoping to see improvement going from E5200 to i5

And eventually more games and apps will support Quads, Battlefield for instance that is coming out next year

even if a program doesnt use all cores, u can run more of them and it will still be fast.

Exactly. You'd have to get something like "Set Affinity" it is a freeware and it sets cores automatically at boot up, games work faster, especially rFactor, 1 core I had like 200fps, 2 cores 280fps. Or you can set the affinity manually, in task manager.

^^you dont even have to do that. say you have a game running, and your also converting a movie, windows will automatically split up the load between the cores. setting affinity is only if you want to lock a process to a core.

Agree

I saw a huge improvement with my 955be over my older 5200+

My dual core would take 30+ min to convert a 700mb avi when my quad will do it in about 7min
