UPDATE: If you have this problem, check post #9.

How do I fix the problem? This also happened with my old FX 5200 but after playing around I got it to work at AGP 8X but I forgot what I did before. Tried installing latest VIA HyperionPro 5.10A drivers, even tried the VIA 4-in-1 4.43 drivers. None works. And even tried installing the latest NVIDIA drivers and none works! Versions tried: 84.21, 91.47, 93.71.

I really wanted it to run in AGP 8X mode. It's very slow.

84.21: Look at the BUS and there should be a page named 'AGP settings'

RivaTuner v2 RC 16.2 says that too!

mmm no you didnt, pci cards will only work in a pci slot and agp cards will only work in an agp slot. Sooo check to make sure you dont have a pci card and if you really do have an agp when windows boots up press whatever key it tells you too (i think its escape) to go to set up then go and set it to the agp slot instead of pci or onboard.

Mmm.. I'm not a noob.. it's an AGP 8X card.
Everything about my card (even in device manager it says PCI bus 1) says PCI. Except BIOS.

Is this causing a loss in performance, or errors in games?

If not, then I wouldnt bother trying to fix it, since its not harming anything. Just a simple misread.

Maybe, yes. I can only get an average of 5 FPS in 3DMark05 "Return to Proxycon' with untouched settings and stock clocks.

Take a screenshot of the motherboard tab in CPU-z, it also shows if your using AGP or PCI-E.

The 15 steps fix!

What you need:
An internet connection.
Latest RivaTuner.

1. Download the VIA HyperionPro 5.10A drivers from VIA Arena.
2. Extract all the files into a folder.
3. Install it and then reboot.
4. Check your card whether it's in AGP or PCI mode with RivaTuner.
4.1. Go to Low-level system settings.
4.2. There should be AGP tab, if it isn't, continue.
5. Go to device manager.
5. Click plus at system devices.
6. Find CPU to AGP or similar.
7. Double-click on it, properties window should appear.
7.1. Driver tab and then Update driver...
8. Check 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)' and then click Next.
9. Check 'Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.' and then click Next.
10. Click 'Have Disk...' and then 'Browse...'
11. Go to where the HyperionPro extracted > viaagp folder > DRIVER folder > open the folder with your OS's name > select VIAAGP1.inf (VIAAGP1).
12. Click OK and then click Next.
13. Wait until it done copying and then click Finish.
14. Reboot.
15. Check again using step 4.1 and 4.2.

Don't forget to do a test/benchmark (make sure there are no artifacts)!

If artifacts appeared...

5 steps

1. Run RivaTuner.
2. Go to Low-level system settings.
3. AGP tab.
4. If max speed is 8x set to 4x, if max speed 4x set to 2x.
5. Apply and tick 'Apply AGP settings at Windows startup'.

That would only work if you have a VIA chipset.

Yes! When I search in Google "AGP in PCI mode", most users that experiencing this problem are using VIA PT800 chipset (like me).
