Persistant Whirring and Stalling on Start Up

Kind of hard to describe really but if any one else has experienced this they will understand.

When I start my PC it whirs and whirs and not a lot happens, if you click on an icon or try and enter a character it just sits there.

If you then connect to the internet, if you can get a response from the icon, it gets even worse and just getting it to do anything can take ages. I have lived with it for some time now as this whirring usually goes away after about 10-15 minutes and then it works ok.

Of late however this time period has been getting longer and tonight it went on and on with it's noises and extremely stuttered performance for 90 minutes.

Thankfully it has just stopped but it is dammed frustrating.

If any body else has suffered and conquered this please let me know the solution.

Many thanks in advance.

Could be your harddrive since its running like crap till the sound stops. Pop the side off and see if thats where its coming from.

It could be the hard drive, maybe the fans, it could really be anything, but as it is at the start i agree with the diamond member, hard drive,
Or just adding my opinion maybe Fan,
But as said open the side and have a listen,
Maybe its too dusty there,
Also how much RAM do you have, that is nothing to do with the whirring, but maybe something to do with the stalling, as my mothers computer was going very very slow, until i bought another gig of memory and now it workd much better

Thanks for your replies. I will whip the cover off at the weekend and have a look and listen.

Tonight's whirring only went on for about five minutes and everything is working fine.

Is there any way that the stalling / slow performance could be attributed to the anti virus software performing it's start up scan or similarly Windows automatic updates downloading stuff on start up?

Yes, if you antivirus runs a quick or full scan on start up then it would prety much slow down your computer to a full stop. Also depends on what anitvirus you have, if you have a free one, then perhaps not, if you have one you paid for, then most definetely yeas.

Thanks Camel..

The anti-virus has been my suspiscion for some time, it is a paid one and in the spirit of non-advertising I won't mention it, save to say it was also the name of a British Motorcycle in the old days.
