Personal server question for the pros...

This is my first post/thread/question so let me -right off the bat- say thanks for having me!

Now down to business: I have a pretty fair size site that I host on line and I rent server space off this totally unreliable company to the tune of $70 a month. My question is that I'd like to just buy my own server off of Craigslist for (seemingly) cheap money, and host the forum myself. Only trouble with that is I'm nearly RETARDED when it comes to this techie stuff, but I'm pretty smart and eager to learn.

Long story short, could anyone here school me on what I would need for equipment, what kind of equipment, and how the hell I would go about doing it myself? Please keep in mind that I only have about a years worth of experience in the computer world and just finding this site and typing here is about the extent of my knowledge.

ANY and ALL help would be GREATLY appreciated! (Especially in laymens terms, ha ha.)

Thanks, guys & gals...

i take it you mean set up a server to host your own website? you probably wont need to buy anything you can use most computers to host your own website but you may have to upgrade depending on your needs
remember the speed of your site will be limited by the speed of your connection to the internet and could be more open to securtiy problems and attacks than the web hosting company
you may want to look into finding a cheaper hosting company as setting up your own server and maitaining it can be a long and frustrating process
heres some info and how tos

i have never tried to set up my own server and have allowed my website to be hosted by my isp but this could be an interesting project :)

One more thing as well.. who is your ISP? Many of them charge extra for a static ip and without one you will not be able to host a reliable site either.. Also does your ISP allow you to even do this? Many will just block you and turn your modem off if you hit a threshold now or if they see a websever at your home you have to be very careful! ESPECIALLY if you have Comcast aka comsuck...

I have Verizon, do you know if they would do it? And does it cost extra for this? (More than the 70 a month I pay now?)

$70 a month is highway robbery, you can get your own virtual server for as little as $19/month. However, you will need to run and maintain it yourself. That means if a hard disk crashes you are responsible to restore back ups when the host replaces the drives.

You are also responsible for the security, configurations, and so forth. So, maybe that $70/month is paying for other than hosting services.

Will do, and thanks! Just one more question regarding this. I have the option to trade an old Kenwood system for new computer parts. Would these parts be a good start for my server? And if so, what else would I need to complete it?

Thanks!
Are these compatible? The guy on Craigslist is bugging me to make the trade, ha ha.

Thanks!

If you want to run a server with Verizon, you'll need to tell them that you're a business and pay accordingly for a static IP. I looked over my Terms of Service and running a server is specifically verboten with home DSL.
