Phenom 9550

Its so low on clock speed I would not waste my money on it. If you want a Phenom the 9750 is only 15 more bucks or the 9850 with a unlocked X is only 35 bucks more. I would say the 9500/9550 is at the bottom of the barrel as far as core yields go.

Yea the 9650 should be a better yield. Since the Phenom is a monolith quad core (all 4 cores on one die) there stuck with releasing it at the GHZ of the slowest stable core of the four and not having as good yields overall. Unlike intel that can just match up 2 dual cores that run the same and slap them together. So I would say the 9500/9550 was just at the borderline of have one core deactivated and made a X3. But really your X2 6000 would outperform the 9500/9550 or the 9600/9650 in most task. You could probable get your 6000 to 3.2 pretty easy.

If you're getting a phenom get a 9*50, the "50" as two last digits means it's B3 stepping and has the dumb bugs fixed. Anyway, those aren't great overclockers at all (which is bad).

Is it possible to turn selected cores off in BIOS and see which one of them is the one that clocks lowest, then leave that particular core disabled and go a bit higher? Should be better at least temp-wise... i think.

yea i can get my 6000+ to 3.2 easy but what about the 9650

Well people have been getting the 9850 to 2.9-3ghz and its 2.5 stock. I dont think the 9650 would get a 500mhz increase from 2.3 to 2.8ghz. Nobody really has done much testing on the 50 series yet execpt the 9850. Dont get me wrong the 50 series is a improvement over the B2 stepping ones. But since you already have a X2 6000 your sorta in the same bucket I am. I dont really think you would see a improvement unless you jumped to a 9750 or 9850.

yea i was thinking of the 9850 last night, i might just get that maby. how muck of an inprovement do u think i will have with the 9850 at 2.9-3.0GHz

I don't think you have a clue what you want.. maybe just starting threads for the fun of it. We all know AMD Phenoms are crap. You were on the right track with the Intel. Go with that.
