Phenom II x4 940 vs Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400

I mainly use my computer for making music and I don't plan to o/c anything or play video games with it, which one would you recommend ?
 
Id recommend the AMD build,Because Intel have killed off skt LGA 775.

Have you considred an I5 system/
 
No because I'm not building a new system from scratch and I don't have that much money to put in either.
 
so i take it you already have a mobo? and just want to upgrade the systems processor?

if thats the case you either have to go with amd or intel depending on what mobo you have....you cant put an intel processor on an AMD board.

what mobo do you have?
 
No, I'm changing the mobo as well but I'm willing to keep the old graphic card and ram sticks which can't be done with an i5 compatible.
Plus these are pricey compared to what you can get for a Q9400 or a 940.
 
With a mindset and budget like yours, AMD is probably the way to go. Good bang for your buck and a reasonable upgrade path down the line (Or hopefully anyway).
 
AMD is cheaper but with Intel youll get better performance on gaming and or encoding fomr the higher bus from gpu to cpu. Just the Intel is more and Overclocks well.

Actually AMD has always been know to perform better in games. Also most of the Phenom II CPU's overclock very well.
 
The Q9400 is $230, the 940 is $165 The intel CPU is better honestly, but not that kind of price tag better it's not even noticeable really.

So, OP do you already have these processors already? If all you have to do is buy a mobo, go with the Intel.
If you are looking to buy CPU and mobo, go AMD but don't get the 940 I would go for the 955 since it's AM3. Or if you are on a low budget get the 925. No on ever really talks about the 925 but I dunno why. It's only $140 compared to the 955's price tag of $175 currently, and it's still a 2.8ghz quad core Phenom II and it's also AM3. I would buy it over a 940 right now for sure since the 940 is still AM2+.

Performance seem close enough for me and AMD is indeed a bit cheaper.
So I'll go with the PII 955.

Just make sure the motherboard you get is AM2+. If you get an AM3 motherboard then you will have to buy DDR3 RAM, which you said you didn't have the money for.

Like Fatback said, since your going to use your memory, make sure you get a DDR2 AM2+ board.
 
IF you can id go for the 9450. its more than the 9400 with the 12mb l2 cache and OCs well

EDIT ive had mine at 4.1ghz but since im in a warm room i cant keep it there all the time.
