PhysX processor, for HL2?

Would it help some on my next PC? which will be

8800 or 8900(of some type)
E6850
RAID 0 WD SE16 250Gb SATA 3.0Gb/s

This is for Half-Life 2, I really like the Source engine, will Cryengine2 be better?

Thanks

The PhysX card doesnt do crap for the source engine, it only works in a couple of games and demos. But from what i've heard future games such as UT3 will support it.

Go look at the Newegg reviews for Physx cards, "Oh, it helped" "Buy it" "How did I live without it?"

I have the PhysX card. And it does not improve performance in any way on source games (HL2). I saw a review there that said it improved quality alot, well physics cards DO NOT improve the quality. All they do is allow more objects to me manipulated, and things like more sparks and explosions. But if the game wasnt developed to take advantage of the PhysX card, then it wont do any good.

There are probably 10-15 games out now that support it, but there not that common. Probably the most common game is GRAW, which I have and the only difference there is that when you shoot something, there are more sparks that fly off.

I don't think Crysis will use physX cards.

It doesn't. CryEngine 2 is meant to have fancy physics capabilities that Crytek built from scratch (breaking trees and the such). So I would imagine that trying to make that interface with a PhysX card would just be a nightmare.
Then why have Physx cards been for sale, or invented? These things just fell flat on their face.

Yeah. It was a good idea in theory but let down by poor implementation. The big game developers just said "we've got enough on our plates as it is thankyou very much!" and now the only games that actually take advantage of a PPU are games designed for a PPU, when the technology was meant to be built around existing games with patches.
