Ok I reformatted my comp yesterday and did all the necessary installations ie windows xp home, but when I boot up now it is asking which operating system I would like to run, however both options are identical ie "windows xp home" why are there 2 xp homes trying to run???

Thanks

Aaron

It will do this if you have two HDD's with Win XP Home (or XP Pro). Just select Windows XP Home. It will just boot with what you just installed.

i only hav ethe 1 HDD however when i reformatted there was a 7meg partition i couldnt touch is it possible that there is something in that 7 meg which is causing this to happen???? i tried running the second os (identical to the top 1) but it says there are no files there, so obviously its just the name and nothing actually running behind it...... if i choose to leave this as is will it make the system unstabble in anyway????/ sorry for such long questions, its just im sick of formatting it..

There is nothing wrong.

Right click on "My Computer". Select Properties. Click on the Advanced Tab. Click on the Settings in the "Startup and Recovery" Box.

There will be a drop down box that says Default Operating System. There should be two Windows xp home entries. Below the drop down box there is a check box that says "Time to display list of operating systems". If you uncheck it, you will not see the list of operating systems when your computer boots. You can also change how long that list is displayed. You can also click the edit button and delete the erroneous line. The correct line should have something like "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=" in it.

All that happened was a new entry was added to the boot.ini file and the old entry was never deleted. So now there are two entries.
