Picture storage

I better begin by mentioning I'm a bit of a techno-idiot, so keep your answers simple, please.

My puter is in need of some RAM, I think. Basically, its slow and when I have the Task Manager Performance window up it often says I have no free space as its trying to do something.

My plan is to eventually get some more RAM. I'm wondering if I should also get an external something for storing pics. I've heard pics take up a lot of space.

If I do that I'm wondering what the best way to go about doing it would be. Keep in mind finances are limited.

Would I also have to load the software I store my pictures in (Canon) also on the external storage?

If its a removable storage would I be able to plug it into, say, my laptop, and expect it to work?

My puter has room for expanding (I haven't added any at all yet). Should I just add the RAM and forget about the external storage?

Thanks. I'm trying to learn what I can, but its still so overwhelming to me.

Ok, we need to figure out whether you are low on memory or hard drive space, i'm assuming memory though. Can you give us your system specs like how much memory is installed and what processor you are running. Also what size hard drive you are using and how much free space is left.

What operating system are you running? Is it XP? Right click "my computer" click on properties, on the general tab down toward the bottom will be a listing of your specs, processor and memory. To find out what size hard drive you have and how much free space is left, open my computer and right click on drive C and click on properties. On the general tab, give me the capacity and how much free space is left.

Well, let's see. I know its got Vista Home Premium, if that matters.

Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz
446 MB RAM
32-bit Operating System

Capacity is 154,363,826,176 bytes 143 GB
Free space is 86,235,455,488 bytes 80.3 GB

Is that everything you need?

You definately need more memory. Is this a custom built computer or is this a store bought machine? I need the brand and model so I know what memory it takes.

Its an e-machines W6409 and its a store bought with no upgrades or changes.

As far as what memory it takes, I was looking stuff up on the net about that and it got me confused.

Here's a link. Its quicker than trying to retype it all.

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=W6409

I don't understand why it has recommended more memory than what it says it can handle, or am I not understanding it?

Sweet! Thanks!

Now when I do that, do I need to make a back-up and reinstall it or anything? I'm not sure if by removing what's in there if I'll loose any thing of any importance.

Thanks again! *breathes a sigh of lifted months of frustration*

You won't need to back up anything as all your data is on the hard drive, not your memory. All you will need to do is take out our existing memory and insert the memory from that link i gave you when it comes in.
