Pigtailing Routers - constant DC problem w/ high latency.

Hello all,

I'm new to the networking field. My modem recently went out and I had to purchase a new modem. I bought an Actiontec modem/router and am connecting it to a D-Link DIR-615. I am getting latency issues and constantly keep getting disconnected and reconnected.

This is how it is connected so far:

Actiontec is connected to the Dlink's WAN port, PC 1 is connected to the Dlink's lan port and the 2 other computers are via wireless to the Dlink.

Originally both routers were set to 192.168.0.1 by default so I changed the Actiontec's IP to 192.168.5.1 and disabled DHCP on the dlink.

As far as I know, that's all the steps I need to take to make this setup work properly. Is my router going out? I highly doubt because my computers stay connected to the router and ONLY loses connection to the internet. Is there a step that I missed while setting up that may be causing all of this ruckus? Would it help if my Dlink's IP was out of the Actiontec's DHCP range (192.168.5.1 - 192.168.5.254; while the Dlink is still on it's default IP 192.168.0.1[seems to me like it's already out of range])?

Thank you in advanced.

Sounds like you aren't setup correctly. You should disable dhcp on the actiontec modem and reenable the dhcp on the dlink router. And then I think you have the change the internal ip address of the dlink to the ip address of the actiontec modem. I hate modem/router combo units, most of the time they are a pain in the butt. There should be some tutorials online on exactly how to do it.

Sounds like you may be double NAT'd. You need to disable all router features on one so the other can take over.

thank you guys for your responses. Ill go ahead and give that a try when I get home from work. I tried to find tutorials online but wasn't able to find any that would help, I guess ill try again if this reconfiguration doesn't work out for me. And as far as disabling router features, which ones exactly are you speaking of? The only one I found that I could actually disable was DHCP.

only 1 router should run the following:

NAT
Firewall
DHCP
DNS

All of those features should be disabled on the other router to make it a normal switch.

I can't seem to get it to work. disabling dhcp on the modem/router completely cut off the internet to the point where i was forced to reset the router and reconfigure it.

As far as disabling features on the routers themselves, the only feature i see I can disable is DHCP and firewall. I couldnt find anything that said NAT or DNS (except for under the DHCP menu).

Do you guys have any other suggestions? I think im about to give up on this set up and just order a regular replacement modem from AT&T (which is what I should have done in the first place). This setup is such a pain.

Thanks,

Yeah, that's the best way to go. I know you can go to walmart and they have att modems there that you can buy. Just remember that you will have to reregister your modem before you can get internet access, but the instructions should tell you how to do that.

Remove one router and see if the problem goes away. Is there are reason you need to run two routers? Perhaps using a switch in the 2nd routers place will suffice?
