Pixel Shader? Whats that

Hi, I bought Medieval 2: Total War, and upon starting it a problem occurs where it can't run because it needs a "graphic card with pixel shader 1.1 or greater". What is this? I have a Nvidia Geforce 128mb AGP card, its old. I'm gathering this is the problem.

Can I download something like a driver that overrides it? Please post all your thoughts and solutions (buy a new computer probably).

Cheers, Mark.

Quoted from good old Wiki...

A pixel shader is a shader program, often executed on a graphics processing unit. It adds 3D shading and lighting effects to pixels in an image, for example those in video games. Microsoft's DirectX and Silicon Graphics' OpenGL support pixel shaders. In OpenGL a pixel shader is called a fragment shader.

and no unfurtunatly you cant download something like a driver that overrides it,Its your Graphics card its just too old to play what you want to with it.

i reccomend you upgrade your gfx card, you dont need a new pc.

whats your system specs?

you could do a cheap upgrade to this card,is not the best and still its outdated but will play that game as it has Pixel shader 3.0

or even better (but this card requires more power and you might end up having to upgrade your Power supply)

Hey, those graphics cards actually don't look too bad, a good investment... I thought they would be more expensive, thanks Nevakonaza.

Manufacturer : Hallmark Computers
Mainboard : Gigabyte 7VM400M-RZ
Chipset : VIA KM400
Processor : AMD Sempron @ 1333 MHz
Physical Memory : 1024 MB (2 x 512 DDR-SDRAM )
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X (Microsoft)
Hard Disk : ST340014A (40 GB)
Hard Disk : WDC (40 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5236V
Monitor Type : ASUS VW193T - 19 inches
Network Card : VT82C570 MV IDE Controller VT6102 Rhine II Fast
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.01.2600 ServiceP
DirectX : Version 9.0c (March 2006)

Yeah so that's my PC, those graphics cards you posted would be good because as you can see I'm still using AGP. However, would my processor speed affect the uses of a 256mb card, or would I even be able to run it at all?

Oh and, how do you check what 'pixel shader' a card has, it never says in the buy information.

Your computer is pretty old.

I would upgrade tbh.

I got the X1650 (PCI-E though)

It plays most games, some on full, some not. I play far cry 2 with my system, on all setting on high.

the only time i lag is when i go underwater...

But thats PCI-E and not AGP. And Ive got a Core 2 Duo.
