I am tempted by the google Pixel XL, the quite black 128Gb model
so expensive though, thats iphone pricing, I might wait a few months to see if I can get one discounted
a camera better than the iphone 7? I have my doubts.
One thing I really like is the notification LED. Its really a choice between the iphone and pixel for me, pixel has the advantage of a notification LED, Apple is much better in terns of software version updates
I think only offering two years of operating system updates for a phone that expensive is not right, if they really want to take on apple, they need to get serious about supporting these phones for longer.
 
In Australia, the 128Gb model pixel XL is AU$1,419.00, the iphone 7 plus 128Gb model is also exactly $1,419
coincidence, I think not, they are trying to rip off apple pricing, but two years of operating systems for the google device versus 4+ years for the iphone
that is an important differentiator.
 
I'm holding off on upgrading to a Pixel due to price. I don't plan on getting the XL though.
 
Can you imagine if you bought a computer, which I should add can be purchased for cheaper than the cost of those smartphones, and they said ih, this will only be supported for operating system upgrades for two years. People would be enraged, google needs to address this issue if they are asking these prices they need to lift operating system upgrades to at least four years to match Apple. They may be the 800lb gorilla in terms of owning android, but they are the underdog when it comes to phone hardware. I see heaps of people with iPhone and Samsung devices, I very rarely if at all see anybody with a nexus device. It is a niche device.
 
A lot of people don't know about the Nexus devices. The advertising for cell carriers always show Samsung, HTC, or Motorola devices. Unless you're really into Android or phones in general you don't know about the Nexus.

I'm not even fully clear on what exactly a Nexus product is. Seems like Google branded products that run completely stock Android and from various manufacturers over the years.

That's not exactly true, you're talking about the Google Play Edition phones like the Galaxy S4 and HTC M(8?). The Google Nexus brand is when Google works with manufacturers to design a phone specifically for the Nexus brand. This isn't simply a branded phone that runs stock Android, but a unique phone that is not sold elsewhere.

Regarding the Pixel XL, I have strong feelings it's way too expensive for what it is. Google is trying to compete directly with Apple and Samsung, and feels it can charge the same price. I disagree, because Samsung and Apple offer features that warrant the price, in addition to their reputation, such as:
  • Water resistance
  • Stereo speakers
  • MicroSD card slot
  • S-Pen
  • Samsung Pay
  • Dual-cameras
  • Guaranteed software updates for 4+ years
  • Edge display
The Pixel and Pixel XL really aren't much better from the 6P of last year, and don't offer anything that warrants the same level of pricing.

Which is why I may just upgrade to a 6P if I see a good enough price for a new one on Amazon.

Hopefully Black Friday would offer some great sales. Maybe by then you'd see if Google lowers the price of the Pixel if sales aren't what they expect. I got the Pixel C when they had a 25% off "developer" coupon code.
 
I used one in the shop the other day and yes it is fast, but I walked away feeling underwhelmed by the phone. I prefer the display on my old note 4
and there was no feature on the phone that made me absolutely want to buy it. Had they matched apples four years of support, I might have reconsidered.
I am waiting to see what the LG V20 is like. It is cheaper than the pixel here in Australia, $1099, versus the $1,419 for the pixel.
Only thing putting me off is the horror stories I hear about LG, but the nexus 5 did not have any major problems when I used it.
 
I was so close to buying a pixel, I wasn't going to buy another Samsung after trying three times unsuccessfully to get their policy on security patches and is updates, I narrowed it down to the pixel or the iPhone 7 plus
And since the pixel is trying to copy the iPhone pricing, I went with the iPhone 7 plus 256gb matte black and I have to say I am very very happy with the phone so far. Yes android phones may have superior hardware and features but I find them lacking in the os updates and with security patches as well.
The worst thing they say about the iPhone is the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack but I actually find that more convenient cause I have a Belkin charge and play adapter, so I can listen to music and charge at the same time and every time I leave my desk at work I only have one lightning cable to unplug instead of two cables.
 
I'm really on the fence with getting either the Pixel XL or the Galaxy S7 Edge come December 2nd. Either way, I'm going the contract route, so the total price matters less to me in the end. Just a difficult battle to decide on.
 
I like pure android experiences, so I'd go Pixel over a Samsung device. Samsung has so much crap on their phones it's not even funny.

If I used my Galaxy Tab S more I'd probably nuke every trace of Samsung I could or use a custom ROM. I just threw Nova on there and called it good for now.

I'd definitely prefer the pixel over the galaxy s7 edge, at least with the pixel google guarantees three years of security updates, with the s7 edge who knows.
If you were still determined to get a galaxy device, and I fall into the rare group of people who think touchwiz is not so bad as people make it out to be, then you would be better off waiting a few more months till feb or march next year for the s8
 
In the end it all comes down to your own personal choice and what's important to you. For me, I would only consider a pixel or iPhone as software and updates are important. Everything is moving to things like android pay, Samsung pay, Apple Pay, I simply don't trust the Samsung platform ,try getting any decent answer from them whether it be via phone or online customer support or in store or twitter, they just don't know or care.
The only thing putting me off the pixel phone was the display looked horrible in its standard format, to me it looked total rubbish, hated the oversaturated look, but finally finding a device that allowed me to enable developer options and switch it to Srgb mode, it looked quite nice.
