Im planing to upgrade the 2ND pc in my sig to this:
Sorry for the long names, they are just straight copy and past from my list.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz LGA775 1066FSB LGA775 G0 Stepping
MoBo: Asus P5KC Intel P35 LGA775 ATX 1333FSB ICH9
GPU: XFX Geforce 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E Extreme SLI Video Card
RAM: 3GB - Brand Needed
PSU: Silverstone Olympia OP750 750W ATX12V Power Supply
ROM: ASUS DRW-2014L1T LightScribe SATA DVD-RW
HDD: Seagate 160GB 7200Rpm SATA2 8MB Cache + Seagate 320GB IDE (From old)

What do you guys think of this? How long will it be a "Goodish" computer?
Is the 750W PSU overkill? etc...

EDIT: The catalogue that im working from is: http://www.nzcozone.com
Feel free to completely rebuild my computer.
My Budget is $2000 NZ (The site´s currency is $NZ)

Current software can't really utilize a Quad Core Processor. And in the future, by the time software can utilize a Quad Core Processor, your Quad Core will probably be quite obsolete.

I would recommend you get an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor or faster. It will save you some money and give you all the processing power you need.

Thanks for the advice.
If this is true though, why do so many people have the Q6600?
Also, I chose this CPU because of its oveclocking capabilities

The quad cores are just hyped. In reality games hardly even utilize dual core, let alone quad core. Sure they can use 4 cores, but its just one or two cores doing all the work and the other 2 are basicly idling. Quad core is only worth it if you do a lot of video editing or do things that require compiling.

If you can afford it go for it. It's nice to have the extra two cores for when you are doing some insane multi-tasking.

Like having photoshop, dreamweaver, firefox, itunes, AIM/MSN, playing a movie. Dual core is fine and works fine for me when I run all those apps. It's more memory intensive then anything. But if you do run a lot of CPU intensive applications, then go for the quad core.

ah, I see. I'm sorry, but what do you mean by memory intensive? I rarely have that many programs up at once.. which dual core model is the bang for the buck atm?

Memory intensive just means that it uses a lot of memory (RAM). The E6750 is probably the best bang for your buck.

Get an E6750, and avoid Apacer because i've never heard about that brand in my life. The Hitatchi hard drive needs to be replaced by a Seagate(more reliable...hitatchi is known for making shit HDDs) and when you get the E6750, overclock it because you can and you should.

The E6750 is probably the best bang for your buck.

What do you guys think of the
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz 6M 1333MHz 45nm? (again copy and paste)
Worth it or just overpriced?

What is a good but cheap company for RAM
Also, can XP MCE even handle 4gb ram?

Amd's processors arent as fast as intels core 2 duos. I would just get the E6750 or the Q6600.

Ok

Thanks for the help guys.
Im going with the the E8400

I might still change my mind and might ask a few more questions but im pretty sure that i will stay with it.
