If you want the latest technology - DirectX 11 go with Ati Radeon 5770. That's in your budget. For brand pick either XFX or Sapphire.

In that price range i would go for a Nvidia GTX 260 core 216 or a ATI Radeon 4890. But if you plan on making this a big upgrade to last the next year or more then i'd say get a ATI Radeon 5770 or save a bit more money and get the ATI Radeon 5850.

Another option is to wait for new competition from Nvidia to see what they have to offer and so the prices of ATI's cards may drop into more affordable price range.

don't get an xfx 5770. they are using custom pcb's that remove a crossfire connector and a power phase. bad news. get a HIS one. or Sapphire.

+1. Thanks for mentioning that. I forgot about it and said XFX. I heard what happened to the XFX 5770's. That sucks. Go with Sapphire i apologize for forgetting that.

Holy jesus you are on a witch hunt. I dont blame you for it but wow. Are you going to RMA that card or keep it for a top or bottom xfire? I wouldnt cause I am a worry machine and would always think about the power phase.

Same here. If the sticker on the top had a print problem I would probably return it :). Anyways, about the video card, I would probably also go with a Radeon HD 5xxx series card, or, if you're not in a rush, wait for Nvidia's "Fermi" cards to come out. It'll be interesting to see what they pull out. For the Radeon HD 5xxx series cards, on that rig, I would probably try to not bottleneck by going with a 5850 or 5870, but the 5770 would still be an option for me.
