Hello, I have a have a 32-bit operating system with 4 gb of ram (3.50 useable) and an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad processor. I have plans to buy an i7 processor for this computer, but if I do so, would I have to buy a new mother board? Please help me asap!! Thank you!

(Also note: I have an NVIDIA Geforce 8500 GT with 2.047 Gb of total available memory and .512 out of that 2.047 gb of dedicated video memory)

Is this a custom built or store bought computer?

In any case, you would need to buy a new motherboard because the Core2 chips are Socket 775 and the Corei-series chips are socket 1155.

My humble apologies, what is a socket for a processor? My father got it for me, but based on the specs I'm assuming it's store bought, but he upgraded the video card.

as said above, your core 2 quad processor has a 775 socket, a core i7 will have a socket 1155 currently. you will have to replace the motherboard and ram to do a cpu swap.

Hello Stratos

  1. Please download PC Wizard from my sig, install it and run it.
  2. Go to FILE, SAVE AS and click OK.
  3. Copy the text out of that file and put into this thread.

That will tell us all we need.

Yes, you will have to buy a new motherboard. You have a slot 775 motherboard and a slot 1155 processor will not work on it.

What are you upgrading for? Gaming? Productivity?

If you are gaming, spend your money on a graphics card as if you upgrade your mobo you may need a new copy of Windows. Also, install the 64bit version of your OS so you can utilise all 8GB of RAM.

I plan on upgrading for gaming, yes. This was the ideal processor I intended to buy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116502

All in all, I just want to upgrade my computer so I can run games better. If anyone could offer any better processors for the price, good motherboards for the price, or anything that would be good for a gaming desktop, but would go easy on my budget, I would be very grateful. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out.

i5-3570k is the ideal gaming processor. Most games don't even take advantage of 4 threads, let alone the 8 of the i7.

Motherboard, UD3H for price, UD5H for performance.

But really, add a better GPU to your current system and you should be good. You can OC too if your motherboard allows.

Don't worry about an upgrade of mobo and cpu unless you plan on using heavily cpu orientated games like MS FSX.

Spend your money on a graphics card. Post what PSU you have.

Thank you for the feedback, but why would I buy a new graphics card if mine is already 2gb? Isn't that good enough? And what is my PSU?

Video ram is plenty, yes, but newer cards have more video processor cores on them and are much more powerful than yours currently is. Your card is a good 6 years old, and if you stick a nice card in like a 7850 you'd see a nice improvement in FPS.

Okedokey, is this the processor you were referring to? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504

He wasn't referring to any processor. He just said install the 64-bit version of Windows you're currently running so you can use more than 4GB of RAM. Wolfe just suggested the processor if you wanted to go through the whole mobo/cpu upgrade. But with your current setup you'd be best to just upgrade your video card for now.

Yes, take the side off your computer, record the model number on the box that you plug the power into.

Post your budget.

Install Windows 64bit OS.
