Purpose: need fast processing of large files as well as solving hard optimizing problems. (matlab, fortran, many parameters optimization involving a lot of data). If you have something in mind based on E6600 (or may be something different?), help me plz

Budget around $2000 including monitor.

First question which 4gb version is better: 1 kit (2x2GB)

or 4x1GB, for example, two CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

Or may be its better to get a more expensive memory for such a computer?

Second question is MB. I think ASUS.. Is last "vista-ready" good, or just advertizing is good?

As for the rest, here is whole configuration I have in mind. Most likely I'll take a cheaper video (cool to have a good card, thogought i do not really need it..), all suggestions welcome. Please, if you think i put it in a crazy combination, do not keep it to yourself :)

Looks good except I'd probably buy the case w/o the psu or get a different/cheaper one and get a better psu. oh yeah and your forgetting the OS.

For the tasks you've described, an 8800GTS is extreme overkill. Are you planning on gaming with it as well?

I thought it is. The reason I took it is that I did not want a complete crap video card since buying close to a hight-end machine. Thought I am planning to have windows vista at some point, I heard it needs a good video support.

Can you recommend me something given the descrived? No gaming. Everything esle thougth a task (like working in photoshop ets)

If you are looking at multi tasking and serious cpu performance I would consider the dual core xeon processors...

They are built and more importantly rigorously tested for server applications making them an ideal cpu for long and strenuous cpu involved applications...

This is completly new for me. Can you help me to get a decent system on that? I guess, this is way more expensive...

I have some credit possibilities, something around $3000 for the whole system.
