Please help - can not connect to WiFi-(Internet)

I recently was given an older Dell Ispiron 8600 laptop and a rather recently home build (MSI mb+FX processor) tower computer, both using Windows 7 and I have problems getting on the Internet. Besides being wired for Router distribution in the house, (there is a connection jack in every room) I have also WiFi available in the house.
My problem is that I do not know what the procedure is to have a computer connected to one's WiFi or router. In the past, I clicked on the IE logo, and then on 'connection problems' when it told me that it could not find an Internet Connection. I can remember that a program guided me through a procedure where I could connect to the router, and then connect to the Internet. Now, when loading IE, in both cases the computer tells me that there is no connection available, with no other clues what to do next. The laptop has WiFi capabilities, while the Tower was connected through a cable previously.
Can anybody help me getting connected again? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, and I tried it on the Dell, but it does not work. When I go to the Device Manager, there is no mentioning of wifi, but I know for sure it has the capability (It was on it before I got it) and there is even an ON/OFF button for it on the keyboard. The device manager shows an 1394 Net Adaptor, but I don't think that is it. (Is that not used when you connect with an cable?)
The Dev. Man. shows under "other" - Ethernet controller, Network Controller, PCI Modem - among others.
Any other suggestions?
 
It's probably missing the driver. Right click on Network Controller and go into the Hardware ID and copy it here for us to find the appropriate driver for you.

Thanks. I did. it comes back with The drivers for this device are not installed (Code28). Unfortunately it does not know either the Manufacturer (Unknown) and when I enter Reinstall Driver it can not find a driver for it.

I asked you to post the hardware ID so we can find you the correct driver.

Sorry, I do not know how to put a copy of an page image in the forum body. I thought I gave you the information you needed.
Can you tell me how to copy the read out of the DM in my answer? Remember, it is on a different laptop computer, not on the one I am presently working on.

Also, I made a mistake in the original question. The laptop runs XP Professional, not W 7. The Tower does run W 7. But the same question is still valid.
 
Doesn't matter what OS it runs. The screenshot I posted is just to show you where to go to get what I need. Just open the Hardware ID and copy the hardware ID into a notepad file or something and share it here (the text itself, not the notepad file). I don't need a screenshot, just the hardware ID.

Even easier, flip the laptop over and see if there is a sticker on the bottom that says Intel or Broadcom on it with a model number.
 
OK, will do so.
In the mean time I got the tower to work. When you mentioned "missing drivers" in your posting, I remembered that I have a CD with drivers software for the MB used, and after loading that in, it worked on the Internet.
Have to remember that the nexrt time. Now the Laptop....
 
No such stickers. As far as the Hardware is concerned, what do you like to know? There is a list of 5 yellow question marks under "Other devices", the only one that has a question mark next to it. They are:
Ethernet controller-Multimedia Audio Cont.-Network Controller-PCI Modem-Video Controller.

There is also a Header above all this called "+Network Adapters - 1394 Net Adapter"

Do you have XP SP3 installed? If so, then do as Voyagerfan suggested and post the hardware id numbers for me to give you the drivers. Right click on each entry that needs a drive and click on properties, click on the details tab, give me the 4 digit vendor and device id numbers. ven_xxxx and dev_yyyy where x and y are 4 alphanumeric digits. Also, if you see a sticker with dell service code on it that would help as well.

Yes, XP SP3 is installed. There are hardware ID numbers to be found in the Device Manager list on each of the devices listed above. But there is no way of getting it out of there on Notepad. I copied by hand below
Example Under "Ethernet controller Details - PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4401&SUBSYS81271028&REV_01\4&39A85202
Example under "Network Controller Details - PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4422&SUBSYS_27218086&REV_05\4&39A85202&0&18F0
Do you need any other ones? The other ones do not seem to be relevant.

Underneath on the sticker : SERVICE TAG FPGQP61 EXPRESS SERVICE CODE 34191508960

Anything else? I really appreciate you guys help.

Thanks johnb35. Will get those drivers. @drivers for sound and audio, they work, so I assumed that XP took care of that, but I can download them too, just in case.
Dumb question: How do I get it to the Dell? Remember, I can not get it on the Internet with the Dell, thus I can not directly download the file from the website. Also, where do I put the file so that the OS can find it?

Did so. Turns out, they are self extracting files and they installed themselfs too. Everything works now, got connected to wireless and Internet, except that Windows declared my IE obsolete and refused to upgrade it because I am still using XP. Wants me to get rid of old equipment and upgrade. Tough. Keep on using XP, no reason to go to 7 and complicate matters, run too many older programs on this (old) Laptop. Using Firefox now, works fine with XP.
