Please Help, COMP wont turn on...

Hi guys, need some help. Just put my new PC together, and i cannot get it to turn on. I have done everything i can find in the manuals that i can gather would impact it powering up, and nothing works. Heres a list of everything thats in it. Maybe something is incompatible? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will post a pic shortly.

Have you read the manual and made sure the ram is seated in the correct slots this could cause your computer to not display/power on.
 
Yeah the RAM is where its supposed to be. Checked all connections, checked all the connections again, even changed around the RAM, nothing. All i get its the Standby Light, i hit the power button, and nothing.... I have no clue...

With 2 dimms - put them in a2 and b2. It's 2-2 -then 1-1 for 4 dimms,-,not a-a and b-b. So they go in the blue slots. Seems like it should run in single channel the way you have it tho, so that my not be the startup problem.

Aren't you getting anything at all, not even a brief fan start?
 
Thats the same Mobo as myself, or at least a variant. You'll need the ram in the 1st and 3rd slots as already suggested (but this won't effect it powering up) . Also you could try to start the build again, ensuring that you've started with the little stands are below the mobo and its not shorted straight off.
Other than that DOA perhaps?

Have them in those slots.

check that your switches are in the right way and correct locations

All connections have been checked a thousand times.

I had something similar. It turned out the On/Off switch had broken off at the back so the button did nothing. Make sure the On/Off is working and connected, and not mixed up with the Reset button

The Standby light comes on, and when i hit the power button the Power LED comes on for half a second then fades out.


By the way guys, i bought a brand new PSU tonight, hooked it all up, and it does the EXACT... SAME... THING.... which is nothing.
 
You could try working through this flow chart which may be more logical than your current state of mind. You can click on each condition to get an explanation. It's not complicated but don't dismiss anything as "of course it's OK, I checked it".

You can also check voltages to the MB as described here. The paragraphs below the connector diagram describe power up. You may find that too technical or you don't have a multimeter. In the absence of more expert advice, from my reading, when the AC is turned on pin 9 should have 5V on it. When you press the "On" button, the voltage on the green wire pin 14 should go from about 3.5V to about 0.8V and the fans should start up.

It appears the "On" button is working (power led comes on) but you could disconnect it and check the resistance goes to near-zero when you press the button.
 
Have you a connection to the 8-pin EATX12V supply? It's up near the mouse/keyboard port and would be 2 4-pin or 1 8-pin connector. That's the only item I can see in the manual that could be missed. I could not confirm the particular PS as having EPS12V supply but that should be obvious from the wiring.

If you work through the manual it would be near-impossible to go wrong. The "Power On" and "Reset" buttons could be connected incorrectly as I mentioned before but the entire system panel connector would be difficult to wire the wrong way round.

Did you check any breakers or fuses in the power supply?

The MB has some neat gizmos for troubleshooting but you have to get power first!
 
Have the EATX12V connected, Power on and Reset buttons are connected in the right place, and ive even turned the pins around different directions JUST in case its a polarity thing, and nothing makes a difference. Have now tried two PSU's, and tested both with a PSU Tester, and theyre both good. Followed every manual to a T.

I understand the pain! Unfortunately this is the downside of doing it yourself and how things can get very expensive in a hurry.

The power and reset buttons connect their signals to ground so reversing the lead ends makes no difference.

I'm not an expert. The problem seems to be in the initial power-up. Even if you had mishandled the board and fritzed some components, it's unlikely that would show at this stage. In the first 0.5 to 1 seconds of the boot process, the PS starts up. The fans should start up too.

Once the Power Good signal is present, the CPU is allowed to start. The RTC RAM should not come into play. You could reset just to be sure, not forgetting to put the jumper back. I would have thought the fans would have enough time to move before this point.

You should try to check the voltage on the Power On terminal and the +5V standby per my post #10. The terminals are slightly different to the article I linked - the +5V standby is the 4th terminal down (see manual). That would be a start. You could also check the Power Good/OK terminal immediately to see if that goes high (over 3.5V?).

I downloaded the manual for the LE version but I assume it may be applicable to whatever rev you have.

Exactly!

Also make sure that the switches like the HDD led is on the correct place including the + (plus) and - (minus)!
Also be sure that you did NOT change the power/voltage settinigs in the BIOS as that can cause the problem and your computer is automatically turned off to prevent damage to the hardware if its not already damaged.
By the way did you put the thermal paste (CPU cooling paste) on the processor before putting the cooler on the processor???
And also be sure that the fan which is ON THAT COOLER is connected and running properly!
Also be sure that the power unit is working properly!

That's correct but does not help the problem. If the LED's are backwards they simply will not turn on (diode, reverse voltage). The other comments may be more relevant if there was power!

I see that the PS auto-ranges the input voltage so that can't be an issue, not for two units anyway.

From the manual describing the MB goodies:
"Asus Anti-Surge Protection
This special design prevents expensive devices and the motherboard from damage caused by power surges from switching power supply".

That could be an issue but surely it's unlikely. I assume all the HDD and DVD drives are connected up? That article I linked to mentioned not powering the MB alone. While that may not be good for the MB or PS, perhaps it may be significant considering the anti-surge protection?
