Hey guys,
I was on my computer, and I was getting bad temps. so I decided to go into my comp. case and mess around with fans/cooling. I took off my CPU HSF and tried to turn on my computer without the HSF. It turned on for about 10-15 seconds, showed the Video Card screen, and then it just shut down. I thought, well, it turned off because it was too hot, so I put my HSF on, and re-tried it. It still didnt work. Everything is plugged in correctly. So now it just turns on for like 10 seconds, and shuts down, with nothing showing up on the screen. My PSU seems to work correctly, fans spin, mobo's green light is on, HDD spins up. What is the problem? Could I have fried something? I sure as hell hope not. Please help, I am so worried that I ruined my comp.

Thank you,
D

ok first off why the hell did you take off your fan for your cpu. second your cpu is probably ruined.

Hey, it gives me a good excuse to get rid of this POS Prescott. I would need another mobo though...Anyways, I have heard of people running it without Heatsinks, so I figured I would try. Also, right after I turned it off, the CPU didnt seem that hot. I'm just hoping it didnt hurt anything else in its death, if thats what happened. Could anything else have been ruined?

THanks,
D

i dont think anything else would have been ruined except the processor and maybe the motherboard but your going to need another one anyway when you upgrade. i think everything else should be alriight

Is it working now? Usually after an overheat, you leave it untill it cools down, then try it.

That really was stupid taking of the HSF, you shouldnt have done it.

Make sure you have the HSF on right.

Man you really did fry your CPU. People do run processors without the fans with good heatsinks but not without the heatsinks! Say goodbye to your friend and get ready to upgrade.

JAN :D

LOL!!! The funny thing is, I'm not upset. I kind of hated that thing, temps. were way too high. Do you guys think the mobo is ruined? The green light comes on, seems fine. I'll be happy if it was just the CPU that died? Do you think I should not try starting it again? Could it further damage components?

Thanks,
D

P.S. Now that I think of it, I cant believe what an idiot I am. What the f%$* was I thinking? Go ahead, laugh it up...:D

Heya

The processor is fried but I would guess that the motherboard is still fine. However, I cannot be sure of course. We have all done some mad things before, so don't worry.

JAN :D

By the way, after it wouldnt start, I tried it like 5 more times, each time it didnt turn on more than 10 seconds. You dont think I damaged anything more by keep trying it, do you? Also, should I even try resetting my CMOS battery (or whatever it is)? I just need to be 100% sure it is fried, so I can get the show on the road for finding a new mobo/CPU. When I get the new mobo/CPU, the HDD will be fine, right? It will just boot up like normal, correct?

Thanks,

So I just went up (my computer is on the upper level) and tried to start it. This time it got ALL THE WAY to the motherboard screen, where you press Delete to get into BIOS. I pressed delete, and it shut down. But the good sign was, it beeped once, like normal, so I know the mobo is working fine. I dont really understand though...Why would it make it farther into the boot up after letting it sit, just to shut down again? Do you think it just needs to sit for like a day, and then it will work again? I'm kinda bummed, I was looking forward to going AMD...lol. If I can get it to work though, great. Also, whats all this rubbish about resetting CMOS or whatever? Should I try taking out the battery for a bit, or is that bad for the computer? I'm a newb when it comes to memory and broken computers.

Thanks,
D

wow... someone needs to show him the THG article with the overheating cpus during quake 4 operation.... haha thats probably what happened to his proc... what an idiot!

I'm running the 775 3.4 ghz at 44 degrees(under the 48 degrees standard according to Intel) with just the stock heatsink and fan.

And i'm also running the same motherboard P5GD1

Well, you cpu might be a bit screwy but if it can boot up to the POSt screen, you might just want to try and reseat the CPU.

I already did that. It still didnt work. Maybe I will try it again. It still shuts down at the mobo screen, when I tried it this morning.

LOL!!! The funny thing is, I'm not upset. I kind of hated that thing, temps. were way too high.

Then you had to expect to fry your cpu. If it ran too high with the heatsink and fan what did you think would happen without it? :).

You dont think I damaged anything more by keep trying it, do you?

I would say there is a pretty good chance of it.

Also, should I even try resetting my CMOS battery (or whatever it is)?

Of course you should.

When I get the new mobo/CPU, the HDD will be fine, right? It will just boot up like normal, correct?

No one here can give you a definite answer. Assuming You cpu is fried and everything is installed correctly after the upgrade then yes.

Try reseting your motherboard.

what an idiot!

Well b182tm took that comment like a man but I still have to say. It is not needed here so please use restraint.

Again try reseting the mobo.

Anyway, is my CPU still def. fried? And is the mobo OK to sell?

Your CPU could very likely be fried but we can't give you a definate answer without sitting at your PC and running certain tests etc. As for selling the motherboard... It could be damaged also.

How do I do the battery? Just take it out for a minute or so? And is that the same as resetting the mobo?

Thanks,
D

Yes when I say "reset mobo" I mean "reset CMOS"

Most motherboards have jumpers where you would remove battery then set the jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3 or similar. However simply pulling out the batter for about 30 sec to 1 minute should do fine. Whenever I reset CMOS all I do is remove the battery for 1 minute and it works fine on my motherboard.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the help. If this doesnt help, is the CPU most likely gone?

Thanks,
Derek

So I reset CMOS, and it still didnt work. It got past the mobo screen, for like a second, and shut down again. Just wondering, if the video card was fried also, I wouldnt be able to see anything on the screen, correct? I need to be sure that the CPU is dead before I go out and buy a new one, and then have it turn out to be something else. BTW, all my fans spin, the HDD light comes on up front, and the CPU fan spins. The mobo light also comes on when the PSU is turned on. So I think if my mobo, PSU, and vid. card were fried, nothing would spin or appear on the screen, right? I really just hope it is the CPU, so I can get a new mobo and CPU to upgrade and move on with my life....I'm freakin out, any help is awesome. Also, thanks to everyone who has helped, I just need to be sure it's my CPU.

Thanks,
D
