Please help. :) I'm building a computer...

Hello!

I know a bit more about computers than the average person, but I am nowhere near an expert.

I want to buy a new computer, and have decided to build a desktop pc through hp. I've had 4 pcs before, and most of them have frustrated me at some point to the point of wanting to throw it out the window, ESPECIALLY the dell I once owned. Out of all of them, hp seemed to suit me the best, so that is what I am looking to purchase.

Basically, I want a great pc. I want something that isn't going to be totally useless in 3 years (something that I can upgrade if needed). My needs include MS Office (excel, word, pp), digital pictures, music, web design, and gaming. (I'm addicted to The Sims). And I want something fast, well because I'm impatient. :)

Here is what I'm thinking of purchasing. Please give me your opinion on it!!!

HP Pavilion Media Center m8100y customizable TV PC
GG755AV#ABA
– Genuine Vista Ultimate (32-bit)
– Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q6600 (2.4GHz)
– 2GB DDR2-667MHz dual channel SDRAM (2x1024)
– 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS, DVI-I, TV-out, HDMI
– 802.11 b/g USB Wireless LAN card & USB external modem
– 250GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
– LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
– 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, 1394, video
– ATSC-NTSC TV tuner with PVR, FM tuner, remote
– Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio

This alone comes to about $1,124.00 (not including printer, monitor, and MS Office).

If you know your stuff, please advise! Am I making a good decision? Is there anything I should change about the configuration? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

- Melissa :)

The Graphic card is a bit weak.
Why don't you self build?
By the way, don't know if u have heard a software call OpenOffice, it is a free software very similar to Microsoft office, and it can save as Microsoft office's format.

Hmmm... would 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT, TV-out, DVI-I, HDMI be better? I don't really know much about graphics cards... I've been playing The Sims on a pc with an integrated graphics card (I know, yikes). I think my current computer is about to explode.

I don't think I know what I am doing enough to self build... lol. I know a bit about software, but when it comes to hardware I'm completely lost. :(

might worth to have a look on those online pre-build system.e.g. ibuypower. But I have no idea about there after-sell services.
The machine you pick up is not too bad, but still wonder if you actually need the TV tunner and soundcard.

If you are going to play only The Sims, then 8500GT will run it fine, even 8400GS might run it without any problem

But if you want to play demanding games like BioShock, FEAR and oblivion, then you get get a much better video card like 8600GTS or 8800GTS
