Please help me build a gaming computer!

I recently moved to a new house and away from two pretty nice gaming computers owned by my former roommate. Therefore I am now looking to build one for myself.

A buddy of mine has built multiple computers for himself, so I am confident he could help me with putting everything together. I just need some advice and steering in the right direction!

So here we go, my system goals and budget

Goals - Computer can run modern games and upcoming games smoothly (Aion and Star Wars: The Old Republic namely). I'll be playing massively multiplayer games and first person shooters mostly. The computer will last me a few years without major upgrades.

Budget - $700 - $900

If I can't meet my goals with that budget then it's not worth it for me to make the purchase right now.

Thanks for any help!

Look through Forum, for other people searching same things,

Basics you need Intel quad core, DDR2 memory at least 4GB, Graphics Card GeForce 275 or something like that, maybe Geforce GTX 260, more for your Budget, should come out at the top of your budget, maybe just over it. if you want a good one. Obviouse other things like, mobo, DVD driver, Hard drive, PSU, Fans, etc

Search on Newegg.com or similar websites, its prety cheap there,

I specifically do not put any links here, 1 - other threads have them, 2 - do search and not give in on the recommendations. obviousely listen to them, but make sure that you have a look at something else too, just in case.

Just so you know what about you will have:

quad core proc
mobo
4850 GPU
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
Case
650W PSU
DVD Burner

Thats about what you will have. It's been a while since I have put together a build, so I'm not sure of the prices. I'll get you something built up tomorrow.

Sorry for not being too specific... I am just looking to buy the computer. I have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I will need an operating system also, but I believe my university offers some pretty substantial discounts to students on operating systems.

Thanks

Seeing as he doesn't need a monitor (too bad you built it before knowing that...) I would change the proc to a Phenom II X4 955, for $215, the GPU to a GTX 275 for $190 after $15MIR, upgrade to a 750 Seagate barracuda for just 5 bucks more (and yes, its a 7200RPM SATA), put the right link for the 700W OCZ :D, $7 more for a LG 22x DVD burner cuz the one you have is no longer available, the case to a Raidmax Sirius for $90, and let him/her buy the OS from campus for much cheaper.

My total comes to about $845 shipped. If you need to go down in price, then get a different, cheaper case, like the one that Gooberman posted.

well Now I know he doesn't :)

maybe 4890? they're pretty much even but once you overclock it passes the GTX275 :)

Thanks for the help so far.

I am obviously not very familiar with the current state of gaming technology, so could someone give me some insight into the longevity and ability of the proposed rigs? Perhaps someone could even compare them to a dell/hp/alienware that may have similar components so I could look at reviews and also see how much money I'm saving!

One more thing, anyone have any experience with the Newegg preferred account? Good/bad? I am thinking of applying and buying my computer that way. I just had my credit score checked when I rented out my new house and it was just under 750 so I imagine it shouldn't be a problem to get approved.

The preferred account is great, also that is an excellent credit score. If you spend more than $500(maybe $499, forget), its 6 months no interest/payments, and if its more than $999 you can do 12 months, and then just pay it off in equal increments of 1/12th the total cost, and then you can pay it out over a period of time interest free;)

I am shopping at Newegg.ca and I can't seem to find the same one.
I searched it and came up with three different memeories.

Could you tell me which one I should buy?(The rest is pretty much the same as what you built)
Difference I see is the timing and I like to know how it affects as well.

Choose RAM with lower Latency/Timing.

Basically this refers to the time it takes to execute a given task.

Don't be bothered much by the difference between 8 and 9 because
although there would be a measureable difference, you would not notice
unless you were doing benchmarks, and even then it would be minuscule.
