Please help me get running again!

I have an older HP desktop computer model HP Pavillion 763N. It is a 2.53 gHZ with 1.5 gb of ram. It ran great before but i recently got a spyware virus and it slowed my computer down big time. I do not have any of the original software cds cuz i bought it off a friend like 3 years ago. It does have a legit registered number for Windows XP on the side of the case.

The hard drive crashed on me about 2 years back and i bought and had a seagate 120gb hard drive installed at COMPUSA. Its worked great till now.

I attempted to erase my harddrive to get rid of the virus and start clean. I hit either the F10 or the F11 key at startup and got the setup screen. I could not find the option to clear the hard drive but i did change something. Obviously i changed the wrong setting because now when i boot up the computer i hear the 3.5" drive working and then a screen appears saying no disk or something like that. it wont even boot up to windows. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction to be able to get the settings right and clear my hard drive??? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

go into the bios and disable the 3.5, nobody really uses them anymore, just see if you can get past the boot screen, if not then i think you will have to reformat the partition and will need a windows disc

If it basically won't even POST, I seriously doubt that you'll be able to partition it

Why disable the floppy drive anyways? If he has it enabled, it's probably because he wants to use it

And if you just want to get rid of the noise, just turn off "Floppy Boot Up Seek".

As for your problem, most likely you disabled the master drive. Either enable it again, or reset your CMOS.

to reset CMOS take the battery that is in the motherboard out...then put it back in.

and it sounds like you may have changed it to boot using the floppy drive...so go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence to have #1 hard drive then #2 CD-ROM

You could also use the jumper. Take it leave the battery out for around 10 seconds though (if you can't use the jumper or can't find it).

i took the battery out and changed the boot disk sequence to hard disk #1 and cd rom #2. When i restart it it shows the "HP INVENT" screen then a black screen comes up and said "disk read error. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart"

Hmm... Make sure all connections are tight and snug. After that, try another HDD. If it works, most likely that HDD is dead.
