A week ago, I asked for advice here regarding my computer. Well I already bought a 40 gb hdd for my Pentium 3 800 mhx computer. The tech guy from the shop I bought it from made the 40 gb my slave disk and the original 10 gb as the masterdisk. Now, the problem is eversince that was done, my computer has been running real slow. It starts up slow, opens programs and folders slowly and websites are accessed slowly too and sometimes if I want to change programs the windows disappear oh so SLOWLY..like they fade away in parts..you know like the upper part disappears, then the lower part etc. What am I going to do? I already called the computer shop and another tech guy told me I have to make the 40 gb as the master disk and that'll make things ok. Is that right? also, when I installed Photoshop it told me that the scratch disks are full and so I cannot make a new document because of that. Through the help files, I used the local disk E (the one containing 40 gb) as the scratch disk..I made that the scratch disk for every options there and then when I restarted Photoshop, it told me that an error occured and I would have to reinstall it. I'm getting so desperate I need a quick advice.

Thanks

I think that should be right, I usually don't put a slow drive with a fast one. Your 10GB will not have the same transfer speed as your 40GB so I wouldn't be putting that in with the same IDE channel as the faster 40GB, if you really have to, make the 40GB master.

Your computer is not that faster anyway, and i don't think you would have alot of ram, so it will rely on the pagefile heavily, the fact that you have you slower drive as the master, doesn't help.

meaning...I would have to make the 40 gb the master drive? cos some techs are also telling me to buy 128 mb of memory to make the computer faster? would that help? or is that just pure sales talk?

It would definitely help, but that's not the only problem... how much are the trying to sell you a 128MB for?

Is the 10GB hard drive (I'm assuming that's where the OS is installed) full, or nearly full? Sounds like it's having problems with virtual memory, like was previously said. You don't have enough free hard drive space, perhaps?

yes you're right about the 10 gb with the OS. I don't have enough HDD on that 10 gb.

hmmm

use an ATA133 IDE CABLE,
reformat your PC..
make sure u enable the DMA MODE..
use 40GB as your master,(install your os here)
ang 10GB for slave..
because old harddisk is only 5200RPM or maybe slower than that,
40GB is maybe 7200RPM, so it is much faster than the old harddisk..

As a rule of thumb, you don't put a slow drive and a fast one in the same IDE channel, and if you have to, set the faster one as master.
