hey guys, heres the background... my computer crashed, couldnt find the windows disk, so i loaded a free version of ubuntu on here... id pretty much rather owe the mafia 300 million dollars by 6 am than deal with this another day, my computer used to be so fast etc... anyway long story short, i found the windows disk and i wanna load it, well with ubuntu, you cant load the disk and click on it off the desktop, apparently you have to load the disk and when you restart your computer "press any button to boot from cd" well well well, my keyboards, and yes the work, (ive tried 6) dont work on the back of my tower. when i plug them in, the lights on the keyboard light up all at once, then off immediatly. ive tried moving it around the jack to see if it will light up but nothing. can something be soldered? someone give me some options here, id really appreciate it greatly

also ive tried usb cables, but they arent lighting up until the screen after my chance to "press any button"

I do not get it. Its probaly better to use a ps/2 keyboard. is that what u r doing? if it is, then go refer to ur mobo manual, or just unplug ur computer, take out the watch-battery on ur mobo, wait 2 minutes, and replace the battery, then replug. ur bios should be reset, and as u bootup u will get a 'cheksum error' so dont be scared.

after resetting ur bios ur KB should work. if it still doesnt, then go to ur BIOS and toggle on/off the Legcy KB stuff.

yes ive tried PS2's 3 of them, along with usb keyboards, after much searching and reading i realize this is a HUGE problem.. dammit, and it seems to be no fix, you wouldnt think it would be so hard to get windows back..

if you type broken ps2 ubuntu in google, or something to that nature you would know what i mean. seems like a bug thats never been worked out and a common problem

Have u tried resetting ur CMOS? if u dont wanna, just wait till the linux pros get on here.

umm, have you tried actually using the keyboard even though it isn't lit up? I use a USB keyboard and when I first turn on the computer it isnt lit up at all, and I have a glowing keyboard, so you would think that it needed to be, but it still works nonetheless <---thats really one word!!

yes

if the keyboard works in linux, then the keyboard is properly connected. if the 'press any key to boot from cd' prompt is unresponsive, either the keyboard is disabled in your BIOS, or you have another much larger problem

Firstly you couldn't install Windows from the desktop anyway, so that's not a linux fault. Secondly your keyboard not working on boot is again nothing to do with linux. Linux hasn't even begun to boot when you see the press any key message.
