Please help me

I have a computer thats kind of old, I want to know if I could find a cpu that will work in my computer thats at least dual core or more and maybe where I could find that. Right now its a single core at 3.0GHz. This is what the specs are.
CPU/Processor:
Socket: 775
Supports the following processors:
Pentium D 800 series Smithfield core up to 3.2 GHz
Pentium 4 Prescott core up to 580 and 670
 
What model of HP/compaq computer do you have?

Unfortunately you have a 945 chipset motherboard and it won't run any of the core 2 duo's. Your better off saving your money and building a new system.
 
its a HP Media Center m7260n Desktop PC, it runs everything I want it to pretty well, because i got a 9800 gt geforce,. I was just looking to improve its preformance.

the best you can probably do is find a HT P4... but im not even positive about that. it wouldn't be worth the upgrade. build a new pc from the ground up, and use that as a back up computer or something.

If ur just looking for better performance, and not able to find a dual core processor, something u could try is putting more ram in it. Bc the more ram u have the more avenues it has to take for quicker response (if that makes sense).

Just a thought!
 
I agree with PBRacing. It would be more of a hassle to find a CPU and then go through the troubleshooting if something isn't done right. An upgrade in your RAM dept. would be optimal. I would assume you are at 1gig at the moment, you could potentially get up to 2-4 in Windows XP depending on the service pack you are running.

I would turn your computer off, and unplug it from the wall. Then place your hand on the case with it open to ground yourself to the case, then look at how many ram slots you have available. If you have 2 extra slots available then pull one of the ram modules out of the computer and type the serial number into google and buy two more sticks. If you are currently using all of your slots, then you will have to increase the ram capacity to whatever is the next step. For instance if you are running 1gig sticks, then get a two gig stick or two and put those in there. Make sure that your motherboard can handle that much ram, and that you get the same form factor. (I.E. DDR2 PC3200)
