Please help, PC won't turn on!

Brother was on the internet basically, and says that the computer shut down while he was using it. Not sure if that's how it happened or not, but either way, my computer will now not turn on. At first, there was no sign of any power, but now when I try to turn it on, the light thats supposed to be green is red, and the fan spins inside, but that's about it. Just wondering what the problem is, and what possibly I can do to fix it without buying a new computer.

thanks for any help

First of all, it was not from browsing the internet and possibly nothing your brother did. A few specs about the computer would help greatly but try unplugging the computer and wait a minute and try again then tell us everything that happens after you plug it in.

Sorry guys, here are my specs:

Motherboard - PC Chips M950 v3.3
PSU - Hercules Switcher PU, 500w MAX
2.8 GHz Pentium 4
1GB Rosewill RAM (2x 512)
GeForce FX5700LE, 256MB Video Card
1 60GB HD, 1 80 GB HD
Microsoft Windows XP

There's the main info. Thanks guys

Sure I said something, I say everything :P (he was refering to post #2, then refered the poster to Q101 so they know what to include in a tech support post)

Anyway, back to the problem, try changing the powersupply

Also, if all agree it should be the PSU, please recommend me a decent one that's not too expensive that will last me longer!

can you tell us the specs of the PC?

Crome indeed does say it all.

Also, if all agree it should be the PSU, please recommend me a decent one that's not too expensive that will last me longer!

Dang ... spoonfed.

Just a question.... Does it beep at all when you turn it on?
In that case, also ensure that the speaker is indeed plugged in ;) (not everyone uses the PC speaker anymore)

Well guys, thanks a lot for the help. My computer is now up and running after replacing the PSU. Was having a hard time getting it to read the Hard Drive, but it's finally starting now. Having a problem with it reading the CD-ROM however, any suggestions? Tray will open, but will not read the CD. Thanks again

Well, in all the power loss and possible power surge that caused the whole thing, something probably got fried. I would first suggest that you reinstall the drivers for the cd drive and then if it still doesnt work I would simply buy a new drive, they are really not expensive anymore, you can pick up a good brand name one for less than £20 if you shop around.
