Please Help! Power Saving Mode - How do I get out of it?

This is not my laptop. I am asking on behalf of my girlfriend's little brother.

He has a laptop that is connected to a computer monitor which has worked fine since he bought it. Last night he shut it down as normal but when he turned it on this morning it said "Power Saving Mode" and there's no option telling us what to do.

We've tried pressing some buttons and unplugging it all but that hasn't worked.

Can anybody help me please?
 
I forgot to mention that when it says "Power Saving Mode" it just goes to a black screen and then doesn't do anything.
 
Have you tryed removing the battery, and pluging it in? . Usually, this changes the options for full power, and it might help you change settings so it doesn't happen again. Still, if not, it may work with a windows repair.
 
Yeah he has tried removing the battery and reinserting it. Also he has tried another monitor but that also hasn't worked. Is there anything else he can do?
