I suspect I accidentally deleted some sound-related files while "cleaning up" some old stuff on my PC because all of a sudden I can't hear any sound when I try to play a video or even listen to a CD on my computer. I did reinstall Real Player and everything is plugged in and speakers are on. What do I check for now?

Just a couple of ideas for you.

Go into your device manager and see if there are any problems. Check your sound card. You might have deleted a driver and you might have to reinstall them.

Or, check on your volume control panel, you might have disabled your sound there.

First check that you did not mute or disable your sound in the sound control panel.

On the lower right side of your screen you should see an icon that looks like a speaker. Double click on it and make sure that there are no check marks next to your Wav, CD, or speaker volume sliders. If they are checked, un check them.

In your device manager Start/settings/control panel/ system/ harware/ device manger. Look at your sound card settings. Right click on them and go to property's, if they say they are all working correctly, then you have a different problem.

Sound like you have a driver issue. If you have the driver disk for your sound card, I would go into your device manager, and right click on your sound card and delete it from the device manager. Then reboot and windows should auto reinstall the sound card after reboot. If the drivers aren't automatically installed for the sound card after windows detects it, then you may have to go back into the device manager and reinstall the drivers for it.

You must check sound card in device manager. Maybe you have uninstall your sound card. If it's true, you must install again the driver of that's sound card.

You also check, your computer sound mute / no. If yes just make it's not mute.

Or, your sound card is broken. But, i hope you don't get this problem.

There you go. After it reboots, if the sound doesnt work just reinstall the sound drivers.
