I have a Gigabyte S-series motherboard with core2 duo and NVIDIA 8800GT.
Yesterday I rearranged my computer cables for aesthetics and better airflow. After I reattached everything, I booted up, and the computer 'turned off' as ubuntu was loading. I checked to make sure everything was plugged in properly, and that all cards were nicely pushed into their slots, and started it again...same problem.
I then removed everything except for the video card (I have no onboard graphics), keyboard, and mouse, and started it up. After it was on for a couple of minutes, it turned off again. I checked that the CPU and GPU fans were running properly and removed any dust from them.
I also tried a PSU from another computer, same problem.
I removed the GPU, and started it up. I believe I got into ubuntu, and the computer didn't turn off. Unfortunately I don't have a start up sound, so I can't be sure, and I don't have time to change it once I get into ubuntu with the GPU in.
If I try to turn it on straight away after it turns off, it turns off quickly, often not even reaching grub. When it has been off for a while, it sometimes boots into ubuntu for twenty seconds or so before it turns off. This makes me think temperature may be an issue, but all fans seem to be working fine.
This happens if I boot into Windows 7 too by the way. Often the mouse is 'glitchy' and doesn't even move unless I move it very slowly. Other times it will move normally. I have tried to look at bios, but it happens when I'm in bios too.
I'm worried that it is a problem with my video card, but don't want to fork out on a new one only to find that it was the motherboard or cpu causing the problem. I don't believe I did anything to damage any parts, but it's possible that the motherboard was damaged when I removed the ATX cable or something like that.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the fault? Is there a way to find out which component is causing the issue without buying anything? Any help on this would be much appreciated as I am currently stuck using my little eeepc netbook.
I don't care if my cable management is messy anymore. I just want my computer to work
UPDATE: I just tried the system without the GPU installed again, and this time it turned off. It must have been a fluke before that it didn't turn off. At least now I've ruled out the GPU as the problem. I haven't tried removing RAM yet. I have 2x2GB, so I can remove them one at a time. Then at least I can narrow it down to motherboard/cpu if the RAM isn't causing the issue.
UPDATE 2: I removed the cpu fan and reinstalled it. I've been using the computer for 10 min now with no issue, so here's hoping that the problem is solved. Could a loose fan cause a problem like that?
